Paper Planes

When an artist approaches a blank piece of paper, they are starting with a plane. Where they choose to take it from there is a question that can be answered in any number of ways. Whether the imagery sits on top of it, sinks into it, or is formed out of it, are just a few of the options. Whether it is approached as a painter, a printmaker, draughtsman, collage-artist, or even sculptor, are other choices that are available. For this exhibition at SLATE Contemporary Gallery in Oakland, we have surveyed the range of possibilities by bringing together 54 paper works by 23 different Bay Area artists in a salon-style installation.
