First Friday: Liminal Space

Liminal Space, on view at SLATE contemporary in Oakland for the month of August and into September 2024, presents the work of Amy Donaldson and Kate Zimmer, two California painters working in the ambiguous intersection between landscape and abstraction. Both artists invite us into a world of illusion, filled with mountains, creeks, beaches, rivers, and stones, before pulling us back to the literal and materialist act of painting, where a gesture, the thickness or thinned of the paint body, and the interplay of shapes and colors takes center stage. These works are full of earth and grounding, while constantly opening up unto the unknown, fluid, and etherial.
