Step into the magic of cyanotype—a beautiful, monochromatic printing process that produces vivid cyan-blue prints using the power of the sun. Invented in the 1800s, this camera-less photographic method feels like joyful alchemy.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the history of cyanotypes, including the work of Sir John Herschel, who developed the original chemical formula in 1842. You’ll learn to coat both paper and fabric with light-sensitive solutions, create one-of-a-kind solar prints, and experiment with wet and bleaching techniques to shift tones and enhance mood.

Inspired by early botanical photographer Anna Atkins, you’ll create imagery drawn from the natural world and experiment with three-dimensional compositions. You’re encouraged to bring your own objects to incorporate into your prints—such as plants, lace, keys, safety pins, rubber bands, nails, or gloves—anything that might cast an intriguing shadow.

Come play with light and chemistry, and leave with a series of luminous, personal prints that celebrate experimentation and creativity.
