Elder Dancers Bio
Susan Almazol (left) is a visual artist, dancer, and curator based in Oakland, CA. She became a sculptor at 54, danced for the first time on stage at 66, and began creating nude self-portraits at 71.
Judith Kajiwara (right) a life-long dancer, Judith Kajiwara has dabbled in many dance and movement forms. Since 1994, she has performed as a Butoh solo performing artist, telling stories designed to uplift the human spirit.
Arisika Razak (left) has led healing and empowering workshops nationally and internationally for over forty years. Her early work was dedicated to reclaiming the power and sacredness of the female body.
Deborah Vaughan (right) is the co-founder and artistic director of Dimensions Dance Theater in Oakland CA. She brings to the stage both conceptual material and a point of view that takes the experience of Africans and African-Americans to a new frontier by blending contemporary influences with the deep and vital traditions of the past.
The “Seize the Gaze” exhibition is a captivating immersion into the boundless presence of women of color across generations made possible when women of color themselves determine the gaze – the lens through which they are perceived.
