SUMMARY:Artist's Talk - Frank D. Cole: The House Inside
DESCRIPTION:Frank Cole Artist’s Talk\, April 18th starting at 2 pm.\nExhibition on view through April 25th. \nFrank D. Cole will discuss his work on view in “The House Inside” at Transmission Gallery\, starting at 2 pm\, Saturday\, April 18th. \nFramed by porches\, window casings\, and thresholds\, Cole’s paintings position the viewer in an interior space\, looking outward. Beams\, panes\, and floorboards divide and measure the picture plane acting as armatures for recollection\, holding in place fleeting impressions of light on water\, wind through tall grass\, or rain dissolving a stand of trees. The result is both architectural and narrative\, emerging as quiet meditations on place and time\, imbued with tranquility. \nSee the work through April 25th. With concurrent solo shows\, more artwork on view in the Gallery Office and GearBox Gallery just downstairs\, Transmission Gallery is an unexpected art oasis upstairs in the “ART” building at 770 West Grand Ave. in West Oakland.

SUMMARY:Artist's Talk - Kristie Hansen: Alternation
DESCRIPTION:Kristie Hansen Artist’s Talk: Saturday\, April 11th starting at 1 pm. \nMark your calendar and please join us for the Artist’s Talk\, Saturday\, April 11th. Starting at 1 pm\, San Francisco-based conceptual artist\, Kristie Hansen will discuss the evolution of her art practice and her approach to developing her work. \nNow on view in the Small Space at Transmission\, Alternation includes 20 pieces from Kristie Hansen’s recent Parts of a Whole series in which she sourced discarded garments and accessories to construct multiple sculptural works that retain traces of their earlier life while becoming something satisfyingly new\, as if they were always meant to attain these new forms. \nIn this way\, Alternation approaches personal history not as something fixed\, but as material that can be continually rearranged—an evolving structure shaped by resilience\, adaptation\, and persistence over time. See the work at Transmission Gallery through April 18th\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays\, 12-5 pm.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Frank Cole: The House Inside
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Opening Reception\, Saturday\, March 14th. Stop by anytime between 1 and 4 pm to greet tartist Frank Cole and enjoy the light refreshments and conversations as you check out the artwork. \nAlso on hand will be Kristie Hansen\, whose work is showing in concurrent solo exhibition\, “Alternation.” \nLook for the “ART” building on West Grand Ave. in Oakland\, between Brush and West. While you’re in the area\, check out GearBox Gallery just downstairs. With two galleries in the building this is a great place to see art. \nTransmission Gallery is pleased to present The House Inside\, recent paintings by East Bay painter\, Frank D. Cole. \nWorking from his West Oakland studio\, Frank Cole’s large-scale works emerge from reflections on his childhood home in Mississippi\, with landscape\, weather\, and architecture forming an enduring visual vocabulary. In this work\, Mississippi becomes less a fixed geography than a felt condition\, a stand-in for memory and connection\, suspended between clarity and dream. The result is both architectural and narrative\, emerging as contemplations on place and time\, imbued with reverie and longing. \nAccompanying the large canvases are small preparatory studies that reveal the evolution of each composition. In these works\, Cole tests structure\, color temperature\, and shifting atmospheres. The studies function as distilled meditations—intimate rehearsals for the expansive paintings—where gesture and light are first discovered before being scaled to immersive proportions.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Alternation: Kristie Hansen
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us for the Opening Reception\, Saturday\, March 14th\, 1 – 4 pm. Please stop by! Meet artist Kristie Hansen\, enjoy the light refreshments and join in the conversations. Free street parking along West Grand and the neighborhood south of West Grand Ave. \nAlso on hand will be Frank Cole\, whose work is showing in concurrent solo exhibition\, “The House Inside.” \nLook for the “ART” building on West Grand Ave. in Oakland\, between Brush and West. While you’re in the area\, check out GearBox Gallery just downstairs. With two galleries in the building this is a great place to see art. \nRegular Gallery Hours: Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays\, 12-5 pm and by appointment \nTransmission Gallery is pleased to present Alternation\, recent work by Kristie Hansen\, now featured in our Small Space. \nDrawing on her love of second-hand fashion\, Hansen sources discarded garments and accessories to construct unconventional\, layered sculptures. In Alternation\, she transforms a single\, deeply personal object into a series of intimate sculptural forms. These works originate from a brown suede jacket that once belonged to the artist’s mother—an item passed on during a period of family transition marked by downsizing\, aging\, and the loss of a long-held home. \nRather than preserving the garment intact\, Hansen dismantles and reconfigures it\, allowing one article of clothing to generate multiple sculptural works. The suede is folded\, stitched\, and formed into soft geometric shapes that retain traces of their earlier life while becoming something entirely new. Beads taken from her mother’s jewelry are embedded along the seams; introducing variation within repetition. \nThrough this process\, Alternation reframes a private inheritance as a broader reflection on transformation. The work speaks to experiences familiar across generations: the passing down of belongings\, the reshaping of family narratives\, and the quiet negotiation between holding on and letting go.

SUMMARY:Vessel\, an exploration in clay of form\, ritual and story
DESCRIPTION:Artist’s Reception January 17 from 1-4 pm \nTransmission Gallery is pleased to present Vessel: An exploration in clay of form\, ritual and story\, curated by Suzanne M. Long\, on view from January 15 – February 28\, 2026. \nDrawing on her deep roots in the Bay Area ceramics community\, Suzanne M. Long brings together a diverse range of ceramic works that interpret the concept of the “vessel” in expansive and unexpected ways—beyond function\, into the realms of ritual\, narrative\, and abstract form. Included in the exhibition are works by James Aarons\, Susana Arias\, Michelle Gregor\, Margaret Keelan\, Mattie Leeds\, Peggy Loudon\, Kris Marubayashi\, Lisa Reinertson\, Claudia Tarantino\, and Laura Van Duren. Through this collection\, viewers are invited to consider how vessels can carry not only physical contents\, but also cultural meaning\, memory\, and personal expression. \nVessel noun.\n1a: A craft for traveling on water\, a watercraft bigger than a rowboat; a ship or boat. An airship.\nb: A hollow or concave utensil\, a container (such as a cask\, bottle\, kettle\, cup\, or bowl) for holding something. A cup\, bowl\, pitcher\, or vase\, used for holding liquids or other contents.\nc: A human that serves as a receptacle for a spiritual entity to manifest\, acting as a spokesperson for that deity. A person into whom some quality (such as grace) is infused.\nd: A vessel is a hollow tube or canal that circulates body fluids\, most commonly referring to blood vessels (arteries\, veins\, and capillaries) that transport blood\, oxygen\, and nutrients throughout the body and remove waste. The term can also refer to other tubular structures that transport fluids\, such as the xylem vessels in plants that carry water. \nVessel as Metaphor.\nThe essential vessel\, devised in all cultures to antiquity\, is the metaphorical container of all that has been and will be. For early cultures the sky was vessel\, containing creation spirits and the departed; earth was mother vessel nestling\, chiding and providing. \nImages: Peggy Loudon\, Vessels\, up to 15”\, Lisa Reinertson\, Sentient beings\, 74“ x 22” x 22“\, Laura Van Duren\, Rendering\, 20” x 32” x 6”
