SUMMARY:GearBox Gallery presents\, FUTURE VISION with Caleb Dowdell & TaVee McAllister Lee
DESCRIPTION:Future Vision brings together the work of Caleb Dowdell and TaVee McAllister Lee\, two artists looking at the forces that shape the world we imagine and the world we create. Opening reception\, Saturday\, September 26th\, 2-5pm\, with Caleb Dowdell performance at 4:30pm \nCaleb Dowdell’s Our Prism of Dreams is a kinetic\, five-sided plexiglass prism featuring hand-painted portraits of people whose lives have expanded what others might believe possible appear together as examples of persistence\, courage\, and possibility. Painted with layers of translucent acrylic\, the portraits shift and overlap as the prism moves\, suggesting that one person’s accomplishments can become another person’s starting point. \nTaVee McAllister Lee approaches the future from a different direction. Her floating paper collages are assembled from torn magazine images and fragments of text\, bringing together scenes of desire\, consumption\, achievement\, violence\, environmental damage\, displacement\, and everyday life. Images that once belonged to advertising and mass media are removed from their original contexts and placed into new\, often uneasy relationships. \nTogether\, the works ask us to consider what we carry forward. Lee examines the competing interests and consequences of our collective and individual choices. Dowdell points to inspiration in individuals who light the way toward who we can be and what we can do. Future Vision does not offer a single picture of what lies ahead\, instead\, it places hope\, aspiration\, responsibility\, and uncertainty alongside one another—and leaves room for us to consider what kind of future we are helping to make.

With a special exhibition in the Inner Room Gallery\, Second Sight: views of the natural world\, photographic imagery by Joy Every \nReception for the Artists: Saturday\, November 7th at 1:00pm\nArtists’ Talks: Saturday\, December 12\, 2pm \nMore about Tilt Toward Joy: Both artists share a love of color and a playful approach to form\, Hacker with her free form sculptures and Briones-Hansen with her collage like paintings.  These two artists’ unique shapes appear to be in conversation with one another and lend an almost anthropomorphic quality to their abstract sculptures and paintings. Their work will be displayed together in the Main Gallery to create a colorful and joyous atmosphere —something we could all use right now.

(Closed Thanksgiving weekend) \nConcurrent with exhibition\, Tilt Toward Joy\, SECONG SIGHT is a solo show in the Inner Room Gallery\, of the photographic imagery of Joy Every.\nEvery says about this work:  “Second Sight is an exhibit of photographs in which what I see of the natural world is enhanced through double exposures and repeated images. As in nature\, each work holds more than one moment at a time; the recurrence of forms\, the rhythm of seasons and the way memory informs what I observe. For me\, the camera slows down the act of seeing\, whereas digital duplication enhances the feelings I get when I intensely and intentionally look at the details large and small of the world around me. Viewers are invited to pause\, look again and find that the second look is often the most true.”
