SUMMARY:Fragments of Belonging: Artists’ Talk with Dalit Fresco and Jan Blythe at GearBox Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Dalit Fresco and Jan Blythe will discuss their exhibition Fragments of Belonging at GearBox Gallery on Saturday\, August 15th at 1:00pm. Come join the conversation. \nAbout Dalit Fresco: Growing up at the intersection of Asia\, Europe and Africa\, a place where varied layers of cultures and traditions\, languages and signs\, music and soundscapes\, have all shaped Dalit’s outlook\, offering a visual abundance of colors and designs. Fragments of Belonging is a collection of recent pieces that are influenced by an emotional sensitivity to events of loss\, as well as confidently reaching out for a dialogue between ways of seeing\, with a constant reflection of memories and current state of observing and interacting. \nAbout Jan Blythe: Born in Scotland\, Jan was raised in Glasgow\, a city with strong arts and cultural heritage. Her recent works in the show encompass personal\, found and natural materials\, which are hand stitched together to form sculptures. Another work is a stack of cut\, tartan wool fabrics\, Jan has collected over the years. She includes a piece of sculpture made from strips of reclaimed swimming pool cover draped over a wooden form. \nGearBox Gallery is open Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm to 5pm\nLocated in the Art Building at 770 West Grand Ave in Oakland.

SUMMARY:Fragments of Belonging at GearBox Gallery
DESCRIPTION:GearBox Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of paintings by Dalit Fresco and sculpture by Jan Blythe in this two person show\, Fragments of Belonging. July 9 – August 15th. Blythe and Fresco share a similar journey of immigration\, the experience of which is ingrained in the process as well as the imagery of their work. Whether it’s personal items compiled into cultural forms or from memories carried across great distances\, past or present. \nDalit’s paintings draw personal memories from both real and imagined occurrences\, translating them into undeniable emotional views. Her investigations move from inward outward\, and from the specific towards wholeness. There is a longing that is inherently seeking cover\, shelter\, and solid ground. \nJan is unearthing similar longings by compiling\, assembling\, and weaving with both personal and found objects. These materials are seemingly mundane yet gain a new life\, form and meaning under her hands. The dialogue between the painted surfaces and the objects is synchronized in a shared language\, rhythm\, and symbol. \nGearbox Gallery is open Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays 12 – 5pm

SUMMARY:GearBox Gallery Artists’ Talk with Linda Ellinwood and Joy Every
DESCRIPTION:GearBox Gallery is hosting an artist talk with Field Notes artists Linda Ellinwood and Joy Every with reading by author Joanne Furio. Furio will also be moderating the talk. Join in on the lively conversation on Saturday\, June 13th\, 2pm \nAbout Linda Ellinwood:\nEllinwood’s sculptures are created completely from found natural materials. Each one is unexpected\, yet simple and evocative. It is evident that she has been working with these materials for many years\, developing a vocabulary \,building up a library of materials\, landscapes from which to cull; a lifetime of looking\, noticing and delighting in natural forms. Ellinwood’s creations are elegant in their simplicity yet manage to elicit an emotional response: delight\, humor\, contemplation\, disinterest. She has exhibited nationally\, her work is included incollections throughout the United States. She lives and works in Oakland. \nAbout Joy Every:\nJoy Every presents a series of photography-based mixed media works that emerge from direct observation of the natural world. Beginning with photographic impressions of landscape\, light\, and atmosphere\, her process unfolds through intuitive layering\, abstraction\, and mark making. These works do not document place\, but instead trace what lingers in the space between representation and memory\, where landscapes become internalized and reimagined. Through subtle shifts in color\, texture\, and light \,the work evokes horizons\, skies\, and terrain that feel at once recognizable and elusive—shaped as much by feeling as by geography. \n“Joy Every’s latest mixed media works on paper continue her exploration of the natural world through an intimate\, tactile lens. Embroidery introduces a measured\, meditative pace\, where each stitch becomes an act of reverence. The works feel simultaneously fragile and immersive\, inviting a closer exploration.”-Lori Austin\,Owner/Curator of Lori Austin Gallery\, Healdsburg\, CA \nJoy Every has exhibited nationally\, and internationally. Her work is included in public and private collections across the United States. including the Security and Exchange Commission and Embassy of Peru. She lives and works in Oakland \,California.

SUMMARY:The Hidden Treasures of Stan Chan\, GearBox Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Hidden Treasures of Stan Chan\nMay 26 – July 3 2026\nArtist’s Reception: Saturday\, May 30 1 – 4pm\nArtist’s Talk: Saturday\, June 13\, 2pm with a reading by author Joanne Furio. This show is running Concurrently with Field notes \nGearbox Gallery is pleased to present the 2026 Inner Room juried show winner\, Stan Chan. Chan’s installation of artifacts\, writings and drawings creates an immersive experience that delves into a personal story of remembrance from his childhood in Oakland. This visual reading of objects and colorful bits gives the viewer a glimpse into our local past through the art of Stan Chan. \nChan says\, “Growing up in East Oakland my immigrant parents were able to buy a house in the 1950s. It was a Victorian house and it was my shelter from the outside world. When I was a kid\, I dug holes in the walls and in my mattress where I hid my treasures and through the years things accumulated in the nooks and crannies of the house.” It is from these memories that Chan’s installation of treasure boxes and colorful collages emerge. \nStan Chan\, is an artist living in San Francisco with deep roots in Oakland. Receiving his MA from CCAC\, Chan has shown in many solo and group shows locally and nationally including the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.

DESCRIPTION:Field Notes – Linda Ellinwood / Joy Every\nMay 28 – July 3 2026 \nArtists’ Reception: Saturday May 30\, 1 – 4pm.\nArtists’ Talk: Saturday June 13\, 2pm with a reading by author Joanne Furio.\nThis show runs concurrently with The Hidden Treasures of Stan Chan\, GearBox Gallery’s 2026 Inner Room Gallery winner \nGearbox Gallery is pleased to present Field Notes\, an exhibition of new work by Oakland-based artists\, sculptor Linda Ellinwood and mixed-media artist Joy Every on view from May 28 through July 3\, 2026. The title Field Notes reflects Ellinwood and Every’s approach to art making: attentive\, provisional\, and deeply rooted in looking. Like notes taken in the field\, the works operate as records of experience other than conclusions. Familiar forms dissolve into abstraction as images are altered by time\, perception\, and the artists’ hands allowing space for ambiguity and personal reflection.. \nGearBox Gallery\n770 West Grand Avenue\nThursdays – Saturdays noon – 5pm

SUMMARY:Edges of Attention: Javier Arizmendi-Kalb / Susana Arias\, GearBox Gallery
DESCRIPTION:GearBox Gallery presents paintings by the 2025 Juried Show winner Javier Arizmendi-Kalb\, and ceramic sculptures from guest artist Susana Arias\, in Edges of Attention\, April 16th through May 23rd. Artists’ Reception is Saturday\, April 25\, 1 – 4pm. \n“Edges of Attention” brings together the work of Javier Arizmendi-Kalb and Susana Arias in a shared exploration of structure\, gesture\, and the threshold between control and intuition. Across painting and sculpture\, the exhibition engages in a spatial dialogue where perception shifts—where what is seen directly is only part of what is felt. \nArizmendi-Kalb’s large-scale paintings\, each rising to six feet in height\, operate as immersive environments rather than images\, occupying space with both physical authority and emotional immediacy. Suggesting refracted light and architectural spaces\, planes of color\, linear scaffolding\, and gestural marks collide and cohere\, hovering between construction and improvisation. \nIn conversation with these expansive canvases\, ceramic sculptures from Susana Arias’ Tree Series rise from four to over six feet tall. These works do not depict trees; they extract their presence. Minimal yet grounded\, they quietly shape and divide the surrounding space while rings\, joints\, and variations in surface suggest time embedded within the material\, evoking cycles of growth without literal narrative. \nGearBox Gallery: 770 West Grand Ave\, Oakland.\nGallery hours: Noon to 5pm Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays
