SUMMARY:Under The Thumb – A Glass & Mixed Media Group Show
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition at Werkshack Studios brings together four artists to explore themes of oppressive systems\, power\, and control through glass and mixed media. \nWorking across diverse techniques including fusing\, painting\, stained glass\, cast glass and more\, each artist brings a distinct perspective to the ways power shapes our lives and communities. Glass becomes both medium and metaphor: beautiful yet fragile\, transparent yet obstructive\, resilient yet vulnerable. Together\, the works examine how systems of power are experienced differently across individuals and groups\, inviting us to consider who holds power\, who is affected by it\, and what it means to resist\, endure\, or transform it. \nArtists: Elin Christopherson\, Lynne-Rachel Altman\, Cricket\, Anne Wong \nGallery Hours: Saturday\, 1 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, September 19th\, 5 – 7pm \nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, September 4th and October 2nd\, 5:30 – 9:30 pm

SUMMARY:Willam Rhodes: FEAR NOT
DESCRIPTION:William Rhodes: Fear Not\nSeptember 17 – October 31\, 2026\nGallery Hours: Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays\, 12-5 pm \nArtist’s Reception: Saturday\, September 26th from 1-4 pm \nArtist’s Talk and Gospel Choir Performance: Saturday\, Oct 3rd starting at 2 pm\n(William Rhodes’ talk with gospel choir performance by the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir\, music conductor and leader Kenneth Little)\nThis is part of a series of NEXUS SFBay events including the Caleb Dowdell performance with his piece\, Our Prism of Dreams\, starting at 1:30 pm just downstairs at Gearbox Gallery. See one or both at that galleries at 770 West Grand Ave in Oakland \nTransmission Gallery is pleased to present Fear Not\, recent work by William Rhodes. \nWilliam Rhodes’s sculptures on view incorporate objects that have been used\, inherited\, discarded\, or found with elements he has carved himself. Trained early on as a furniture maker\, he combines hand carved figures\, flames and snakes with objects collected from a family home\, photographs\, hardware\, tools\, and other remnants of everyday life. Neon words signal from some pieces. \nThe resulting works resemble shrines or memorials\, but they remain grounded in the ordinary. Religious symbols appear alongside household objects. A photograph might be surrounded by carved waves\, tools\, hardware\, animals\, or religious symbols. A suitcase can become an architectural space. A toilet becomes the base of an unexpected monument. Things with little apparent value are carefully incorporated into elaborate constructions\, their histories becoming part of the work.\n\nRhodes is equally interested in people; family\, mentors\, and leaders\, as well as those who have been overlooked or treated as disposable\, recognizing and elevating their presence in his work. By giving attention to these lives\, enshrining and revering them\, he considers how value is assigned and who gets remembered. \nThe title Fear Not appears in the work as both a phrase and a kind of instruction. It can be read in relation to the religious imagery that runs throughout the sculptures\, but it also takes on a more personal meaning. To look closely at lives and objects that are easily dismissed is\, in its own way\, an act of resistance to that dismissal. \nAll are welcome to join us for the Artist’s Reception\, September 26th. Stop by any time 1-4 pm to greet the artist and enjoy the light refreshments. \nPlease also join us for the Artist’s Talk with accompanying gospel choir performance by the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir\, led by music conductor Kenneth Little\, starting at 2 pm\, Saturday\, October 3rd. Arrive early to see a 15 minute musical performance by Caleb Dowdell starting at 1:30 pm at Gearbox Gallery just downstairs from Transmission Gallery. William’s talk to start afterward at 2 pm with the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir. closing out the event with their performance.

SUMMARY:GearBox Gallery presents\, FUTURE VISION with Caleb Dowdell & TaVee McAllister Lee
DESCRIPTION:Future Vision brings together the work of Caleb Dowdell and TaVee McAllister Lee\, two artists looking at the forces that shape the world we imagine and the world we create. Opening reception\, Saturday\, September 26th\, 2-5pm\, with Caleb Dowdell performance at 4:30pm \nCaleb Dowdell’s Our Prism of Dreams is a kinetic\, five-sided plexiglass prism featuring hand-painted portraits of people whose lives have expanded what others might believe possible appear together as examples of persistence\, courage\, and possibility. Painted with layers of translucent acrylic\, the portraits shift and overlap as the prism moves\, suggesting that one person’s accomplishments can become another person’s starting point. \nTaVee McAllister Lee approaches the future from a different direction. Her floating paper collages are assembled from torn magazine images and fragments of text\, bringing together scenes of desire\, consumption\, achievement\, violence\, environmental damage\, displacement\, and everyday life. Images that once belonged to advertising and mass media are removed from their original contexts and placed into new\, often uneasy relationships. \nTogether\, the works ask us to consider what we carry forward. Lee examines the competing interests and consequences of our collective and individual choices. Dowdell points to inspiration in individuals who light the way toward who we can be and what we can do. Future Vision does not offer a single picture of what lies ahead\, instead\, it places hope\, aspiration\, responsibility\, and uncertainty alongside one another—and leaves room for us to consider what kind of future we are helping to make.

SUMMARY:Night Watch // Gregory Rick
DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents Night Watch\, a striking exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Gregory Rick that boldly reimagines history painting through the fractured lens of contemporary life. \nApocryphal yet deeply referential and incisive\, Rick’s compositions collapse past events with biblical and mythological imagery\, art-historical allusions\, and capitalist spectacle into hypersaturated scenes that are at once facetious and unsettling. A burning cross\, a feline maw\, a tree of serpents\, and tigers charging toward machine-gun fire populate a world where violence–and communal acts of resistance–appear both ancient and immediate. \nFigures clad in Fila jackets\, yellow Hokas\, and other recognizable markers of contemporary consumer culture anchor these frenetic compositions in the present. As a veteran\, citizen\, and subject\, Rick draws upon collective memory to confront the cognitive dissonance of navigating everyday life amid recurring cycles of violence\, surveillance\, and oppression. In works such as Night Watch (We Got Us)\, Rembrandt’s civic militia meets Picasso’s Guernica\, transforming the historical tableau into a contemporary cry for help and vision of mutual aid. \nA few of the works are painted and collaged on silk mesh\, their transparencies exposing the layers of their construction and underscoring history itself as an unstable\, assembled narrative. In Night Watch\, Rick contends with what it means to stay woke and on watch in the 2020s. \nNight Watch runs from September 30 to October 31\, 2026 with an opening reception Friday\, October 2 from 5-8pm.

SUMMARY:Material As Witness
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a two-dimensional image escapes the bounds of the frame\, the scrapbook\, or the screen? Material as Witness explores the photograph as object\, with its own material sensibility and narrative. Objects can trigger powerful emotions and memories\, and materials carry their own associations based on tactile properties or cultural significance. The artists in the exhibition engage in image-making\, in a truly hands-on sense\, to subvert (or amplify) the power attributed to photos as documentary evidence and bearers of truth. \nFeaturing Amy Yoshitsu\, dani lopez\, Gabby Severson\, Lucy Puls\, Sam Kober\, Sarah Sanford\, & Shirin Towfiq \nCurated by Rena Tom

SUMMARY:Angela Johal: Intersecting Colour
DESCRIPTION:Join us at SLATE Contemporary Gallery on Saturday\, October 10 from 4-6pm for an artist reception in celebration of our newest exhibition\, “Angela Johal: Intersecting Colour.” \nThis exhibition invites viewers to explore how hue and tone interact across vividly painted color fields. Johal approaches each painting as a puzzle to solve\, seeking balance among dichotomous realms—physical and spiritual\, light and dark\, vivid and subdued—creating compositions that reveal how each color shifts\, responds to\, and is transformed by those around it. Steeped in color theory\, Johal’s work is deeply informed by the human eye’s natural passage through dimension. This exhibition features abstracted geometric compositions that\, when meditated on\, transform into natural landscapes\, animal-like forms\, and shifting light.

SUMMARY:Leah Korican: DOILoveYou Too
DESCRIPTION:Leah Korican\, DOILoveYou Too\, 2026\, acrylic\, cutouts\, lantern globe\, dimensions variable\, photo courtesy of the artist \nLeah Korican’s installation is part of her ongoing DOILoveYou series and is a variation on a piece created for the Nashville International Airport\, which was installed 2020-2022. It celebrates anonymous women\, crocheting and creating\, making doilies and antimacassars\, and the meditative aspects of their repetitive gestures. This work says let’s not merely make decor — let’s take up space. The cut paper drapes across the ceiling and plays with light and shadow\, and brings the viewer into a place of both reverie and exhilaration. \nBio:\nLeah Korican is a visual artist and writer based in Oakland\, CA. She has a BA from UC Berkeley and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited nationally\, including at the Richmond Art Center\, Bedford Gallery\, and Triton Museum\, among others. Her public art commissions include a large-scale\, site-specific cutout at the Nashville International Airport and permanent artworks for Kehilla Community Synagogue in Piedmont\, California and Rumsey Engineers in Oakland. She is an award winner in the 2026 Guild of American Paper Cutters exhibition “Cutting East to West” at the Heritage Asian Art Museum in Chicago\, Illinois. SUMMARY:Jill McLennan: harm_less
DESCRIPTION:Jill McLennan’s work gives voice to the harmless\, reflecting on the federal government’s decision to rescind the definition of harm (2026) as it applies to the protection of animals and their habitats\, listed under the Endangered Species Act (1975). In her art\, she depicts animals adapting\, inventing new ways to thrive amidst human impact. Using sumi ink\, a brush\, and mulberry paper\, she paints mammals\, birds\, amphibians\, plants\, trees\, and rivers. Then\, tearing the paper\, she applies these images to wood panels. Adding watercolor and handmade paper\, she creates a transformation from reality to wonder. McLennan states\, “The animals are here alongside us\, they have always been here\, and it is our duty to ensure that they remain\, that their habitat is here on earth for generations to come. May my art be a message to harm less\, a cry to the present and a hope for the future.” \nBio:\nJill McLennan creates paintings\, collages and prints inspired by her surroundings and the stories that she collects. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery since 2007. She is an active member of her neighborhood\, Jingletown Arts\, Business + Community (JABC)\, organizing Open Studios as well as beautification projects. She recently printed a series of linoleum blocks with poems\, telling stories of migration and climate change\, through a residency at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley\, CA. McLennan has completed two public art projects: Jingletown Birds at 401 Derby and Emeryville Perspectives at 65th and Christie Streets. Both are cut steel fences depicting the local shoreline with birds\, designed by McLennan and executed by local metal fabricators. Her work was accepted to the deYoung Open in 2020 and 2023. As an artist and teacher\, she is deeply invested in protecting her environment\, inspiring the youth\, and spreading hope and joy into the world. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 24\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, November 7\, 3 – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Pat O'Connor\, K.C. Rosenberg\, Emily Shepard: Material Messages
DESCRIPTION:Left to right: KC Rosenberg\, “Redeem\,” 2017\, Acrylic paint and laser cut canvas on felt 8”x 9” unframed\, 13”x16” framed (photo courtesy of the artist); Emily Shepard\, “Approach I\,” 2026\, acrylic\, ink\, canvas\, thread on panel\, 24” x 30”. Photo: Sibila Savage; Pat O’Connor\, “A Realignment” 2024\, Salvaged cardboard\, acrylic paint 22 in H x 120 in W x 12 in D. Photo: Jeannie O’Connor \nMaterial Messages brings together three artists whose abstract practices are guided by a collaboration with their materials. Each follows a distinct pathway\, using stains\, layering\, repetition\, text fragments\, and evidence of the body as carriers of information. \nPat O’Connor considers the histories held in ordinary objects. Found and repurposed cardboard becomes a layered assemblage\, taking on new form while traces of its previous life remain. K.C. Rosenberg uses words and fragments of language as both material and meaning. Removed from conventional narrative\, words shift between language and form\, creating a space where recognition gives way to abstraction and interpretation remains open. Emily Shepard builds forms through mark-making and assembly\, emphasizing presence. Gestures and materials come together into surfaces that echo experience\, attention\, and movement. Together\, the artists invite viewers to slow down and consider what material can reveal through their surfaces\, histories\, and transformations.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception – Pat O’Connor\, K.C. Rosenberg\, Emily Shepard: Material Messages
DESCRIPTION:Pat O’Connor\, “A Realignment\,” 2024\, Salvaged cardboard\, acrylic paint\, 22 in H x 120 in W x 12 in D\, Photo: Jeannie O’Connor \nMaterial Messages brings together three artists whose abstract practices are guided by a collaboration with their materials. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm

SUMMARY:Opening Reception – Leah Korican: DOILoveYou Too
DESCRIPTION:Leah Korican\, wholly blue\, 2026\, acrylic\, holes\, on card\, 4″ x 4″ photo courtesy of the artist \nLeah Korican’s installation is part of her ongoing DOILoveYou series and is a variation on a piece created for the Nashville International Airport\, which was installed 2020-2022. This is her third solo exhibition at Mercury 20 Gallery. \nOctober 23 – November 28\, 2026\nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, November 7\, 3 – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Opening Reception – Jill McLennan: harm_less
DESCRIPTION:Jill McLennan\, California Quails\, 2026\, Watercolor\, Collage\, Ink\, 22″x30″. photo by artist \nJill McLennan’s work gives voice to the harmless\, reflecting on the federal government’s decision to rescind the definition of harm (2026) as it applies to the protection of animals and their habitats\, listed under the Endangered Species Act (1975). \nOctober 23 – November 28\, 2026\nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, November 7\, 3 – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Opening Reception – Andrea Brewster: Draft
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Brewster\, Draft 1\, 2026\, giclee print\, woven vellum\, 10″ x 10″\, photo courtesy of the artist \nAndrea Brewster’s new body of work\, Draft\, begins with the fundamental structure of weaving: warp and weft\, whose interlacing creates both fabric and an underlying grid. She approaches the grid not as a rigid system\, but as a living structure capable of variation\, interruption\, rhythm\, and ambiguity. The work draws from weaving drafts\, diagrams that function as instructions for generating complex patterns\, resembling a form of pre-digital code. The term “draft” also refers to an initial idea or work in progress\, connecting structure with imagination and instruction with image. This connection between weaving and digital systems is central to Brewster’s thinking. Although digitally constructed\, these pieces retain the appearance of hand-drawn marks\, creating a tension between material and virtual\, order and improvisation. Through line\, color\, repetition\, and interruption\, Brewster explores the relationship between visible patterns and the structures beneath them. \nBio:\nAndrea Brewster is a multidisciplinary artist who investigates the intersection of nature\, fiber art\, and technology through intricate forms and layered textures. Brewster earned a B.A. in Sculpture from Pomona College and an M.F.A. in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute. A 1993 NEA grant recipient\, she has exhibited widely in the San Francisco Bay Area\, with solo shows at Mercury 20\, The Lab\, and Southern Exposure\, as well as group exhibitions at Metal Haus Gallery\, Chandra Cerrito Contemporary\, The Oakland Museum\, and the Peninsula Museum. Her work has been featured in fiber art exhibitions in Ireland and the U.S. She has participated in the Djerassi Resident Artist Program\, and in 2025\, her AI work appeared at Load Gallery\, Barcelona\, and in the book Neo Botanica. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery since 2020. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, November 7\, 3 – 5 pm
