Working in monochrome\, she strips away distraction to foreground repetition\, geometry\, and contrast. What may appear chaotic or incidental resolves into rhythm and order. In Built Different\, the title operates on multiple levels: the city is built\, the environment is built\, and the mind observing it is built differently. The photographs in\nthis exhibit reveal the conditions in the Bay Area that\nbirthed many of the protests of this time. From fair housing\nto farm workers’ rights with the Free Speech Movement at\nthe core\, Harawitz shines a light on present-day parallels\nas a reminder to us all:\nPeople have the power.
