SUMMARY:Under The Thumb – A Glass & Mixed Media Group Show
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition at Werkshack Studios brings together four artists to explore themes of oppressive systems\, power\, and control through glass and mixed media. \nWorking across diverse techniques including fusing\, painting\, stained glass\, cast glass and more\, each artist brings a distinct perspective to the ways power shapes our lives and communities. Glass becomes both medium and metaphor: beautiful yet fragile\, transparent yet obstructive\, resilient yet vulnerable. Together\, the works examine how systems of power are experienced differently across individuals and groups\, inviting us to consider who holds power\, who is affected by it\, and what it means to resist\, endure\, or transform it. \nArtists: Elin Christopherson\, Lynne-Rachel Altman\, Cricket\, Anne Wong \nGallery Hours: Saturday\, 1 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, September 19th\, 5 – 7pm \nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, September 4th and October 2nd\, 5:30 – 9:30 pm

SUMMARY:Hannah Franco: Poiesis
DESCRIPTION:SLATE is pleased to present Hannah Franco: Poiesis\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by abstract artist Hannah Franco. Featuring ten new paintings\, Hannah Franco brings her once-hidden washes of color forward as the true subject of the work\, revealing a self that had long lived quietly beneath the surface. Honoring the power of softness and vulnerability\, Franco pays tribute to the often invisible and systemically undervalued domestic labor and love women have long contributed to their communities. \nFranco earned a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York City and studied fresco painting in Florence\, Italy\, now currently living and working in Oakland\, California. She has shown with Oxide Collective in San Francisco and is represented by SLATE Contemporary Gallery in Oakland. \nOpening Reception: September 12\, 4-6pm\nHannah Franco: Poises is on view at SLATE from September 4-October 3\, 2026. \nSLATE Contemporary Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am-5pm.

SUMMARY:Artists’ Reception – Julie Engelmann\, Amos Goldbaum\, Liv Losee-Unger\, Fernanda Martínez\, & Deirdre Weinberg
DESCRIPTION:Meet the artists of Big\, Small\, and Everything In Between and celebrate this group exhibition featuring five Bay Area muralists. Join us for an afternoon gathering and a closer look at how these artists bring the color\, energy\, and visual language of their public work into the gallery’s intimate setting. Free and open to the public. \nJulie Engelmann\, based in Half Moon Bay\, works across murals\, paintings\, and digital illustration. Using media ranging from acrylic on canvas to spray paint on large walls\, she creates highly detailed and often surrealistic imagery\, frequently drawing on historical themes and using color and composition to create new visual possibilities. \nAmos Goldbaum is a San Francisco–based visual artist known for his signature line drawings\, which span canvases\, large-scale murals\, prints\, and apparel. Inspired by the places and everyday scenes around him\, his work combines multiple viewpoints\, angles\, and moments in time into cohesive compositions connected by a singular line. His murals can be found throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and in cities around the world\, including New York\, Los Angeles\, Seattle\, Tokyo\, and Kathmandu. \nLiv Losee-Unger is a Bay Area muralist known for vibrant\, nature-inspired\, and community-centered art. With more than sixty public artworks completed across the United States and abroad\, her detailed and colorful murals transform spaces through stories of flora\, fauna\, femininity\, and human connection. \nFernanda Martínez is an Oakland-based painter\, muralist\, and sculptor whose vibrant\, expressive work draws from memories and observations of nature. Born and raised in Mexico City\, she moved to the Bay Area in 2015\, where she has developed an experimental and intuitive practice exploring the emotional depth of color\, form\, pattern\, and texture. Her work spans painting\, sculpture\, murals\, and public art\, transforming her distinctive visual language across two- and three-dimensional forms. Martinez has exhibited her paintings and sculptures in galleries and has collaborated on numerous public art projects for businesses\, nonprofit organizations\, and community-focused and affordable housing developments. \nDeirdre Weinberg is a multidisciplinary artist with deep ties to the San Francisco Bay Area\, working across murals\, public art\, and studio practice. Her evolving work currently focuses on climate change\, using a limited black-and-white palette to explore landscapes\, seascapes\, and airscapes with a sense of urgency and starkness. Whether creating work in public spaces or the studio\, Weinberg seeks to build community\, connect with viewers\, and inspire conversation\, reflection\, and new perspectives. \nSeptember 26 – October 31\, 2026\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, October 3\, 2-4 pm\nOakland Style Week Art Tour: Saturday\, October 10\, 11 am-2 pm\nGallery Hours: Saturdays\, 12-5 pm & First Fridays\, 5-8 pm
