SUMMARY:Artist Talks: Present Figures – Curated by Laura Malone
DESCRIPTION:Laura Malone\, Carnivale\, Oil on Linen\, 60” x 48”\, 2021\, Photo courtesy of the artist \nPresent Figures brings together five California painters whose works exist within the figurative language of portraiture\, simultaneously expanding and disrupting it. Centered around themes of intimacy\, boundaries\, and embodied emotion\, each artist takes an individual approach to media\, scale\, and the capacity of the human form to be both a site of identity and a vessel of metaphor. Engaging in profound considerations of what it is to be human—our physicality\, sense of self\, relationships\, consciousness\, and creativity\, these artists invite us to engage with these shifting\, eternal questions and reflect on our own experiences—be they practical\, peaceful\, disturbing\, humorous\, fragmented\, spiritual\, or otherworldly. As individuals\, choices that begin with who and what to portray later manifest in stylistic and material communiquès that boldly and poetically reveal themselves to the world. Collectively\, the psychologically charged spectrum of the group reminds us of the myriad ways our sentience can be narrated. Like Anais Nin said\, “We don’t see things as they are\, we see them as we are.” \nBio:\nWith Present Figures\, Laura Malone expands her practice to curation. Malone invited four artists to show alongside her\, chosen for their unique and diverse approaches to representing the figure: two Southern California artists — Cindy Craig and Shannon Rae Fincke — and two from the Bay Area — Nina Katz and Heidi Brueckner. Collectively their work has been shown across the globe in Europe\, Asia\, and the United States. Malone’s artwork was featured in The Crocker Kingsley National Art Competition and included in “Disrupted Realism\,” juried by John Seed\, who wrote the book of the same name. Malone currently resides in Oakland\, CA and has been a member of Mercury 20 since 2023. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, September 12\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: October 2\, 5 – 9 pm

DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition at Werkshack Studios brings together four artists to explore themes of oppressive systems\, power\, and control through glass and mixed media. \nWorking across diverse techniques including fusing\, painting\, stained glass\, cast glass and more\, each artist brings a distinct perspective to the ways power shapes our lives and communities. Glass becomes both medium and metaphor: beautiful yet fragile\, transparent yet obstructive\, resilient yet vulnerable. Together\, the works examine how systems of power are experienced differently across individuals and groups\, inviting us to consider who holds power\, who is affected by it\, and what it means to resist\, endure\, or transform it. \nArtists: Elin Christopherson\, Lynne-Rachel Altman\, Cricket\, Anne Wong \nGallery Hours: Saturday\, 1 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, September 19th\, 5 – 7pm \nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, September 4th and October 2nd\, 5:30 – 9:30 pm

SUMMARY:Ultrahive4
DESCRIPTION:For August and September we are excited to feature UltraHive 4; a traveling art show with over 100 artists making original cd cover art! This vibrant and eclectic exhibition showcases artists from around the globe\, each contributing unique works that explore the CD cover as both canvas and concept. From reimagined album art to sculptural pieces crafted from actual CD cases\, the show celebrates the cultural legacy of physical media while pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. By transforming these once-ubiquitous objects into personal and provocative expressions\, the artists revive nostalgia\, challenge format\, and reframe the way we view music\, memory\, and material. Together\, their works create a dynamic visual mixtape that pays homage to the golden age of the compact disc—remixed for a new era. \nUltraHive 4 has recently shown at the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles. After showing here at FM Oakland\, it will then travel to Japan for display at the Tokyo Designfesta Gallery. Enjoy while it’s here with us today! \n“Ultrahive4”\nAugust 7th – September 26th\, 2026\nArt Murmur Receptions:\nFriday\, August 7th\, 5-10pm\nFriday\, September 4th\, 5-10pm

SUMMARY:Monika Mayer: LINKED
DESCRIPTION:Monika Mayer\, Flow # 60 – Entangled\, 2025\, acrylic\, coffee and ink on canvas\, 22″ x 28″\, photo: Dana Davis \nMonika Mayer’s new body of work is inspired by the rocky shoreline along the California coast\, shaped by the tides. At low tide\, hidden worlds are revealed: clusters of mussels and barnacles clinging together\, surviving by holding on to each other. By gathering together\, they create shared conditions that protect them from crashing waves and harsh weather. Their strength comes from connection.\nWorking with gathered and repurposed materials including inner tubes and deconstructed soccer balls\, Mayer builds sculptural forms through layering and accumulation. Discarded and overlooked\, these pieces grow into organism-like clusters linked with zip ties and staples and are given new life. Her paintings extend this language through layered coffee\, paint\, and ink\, echoing the coastal environment’s organic patterns and rhythms. By presenting familiar objects in unfamiliar ways\, Mayer invites viewers into a space of ambiguity\, encouraging them to pause\, look closely\, and consider what lies beneath the surface. These works reflect on resilience\, not as something we achieve alone\, but as something we build together. \nBio:\nMonika Mayer is a multidisciplinary artist born in Germany and based in Berkeley\, CA. Largely self-taught\, she began developing a daily art practice during the COVID-19 lockdown\, allowing her to deepen her focus and commitment. She holds a BA in Social Education from the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne\, Germany and a MA in Educational Leadership from the University of the Pacific in Stockton\, CA. Mayer has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery since 2023\, and is an alumna of the Kala Artist-in-Residency program in Berkeley\, CA. Her work is held in private collections in the U.S. and Germany and has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at Tryst International Art Fair in Los Angeles\, Kala Art Gallery\, and in the UK as a shortlisted artist for the International Football Art Prize. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Opening Reception: Saturday\, August 15\, 3 – 5 pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, August 29\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, August 7\, September 4\, 5 – 9 pm

SUMMARY:Emily Shepard: In Flux | Closing Reception and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Emily Shepard\, “Conversant\,” 2026\, 32” x 71”\, photo courtesy of the artist \nEmily Shepard’s large-scale abstract paintings pull viewers into an immersive\, otherworldly space — one of shifting depths\, interacting layers\, and arched forms that float like portals above restless water. Working on unstretched canvas\, she builds richly textured surfaces through gestural mark-making\, watery drips\, and stitched canvas shapes. Indecipherable loops of script speak to rhythm\, breath\, and cycles.\nShepard’s work is mirrored by her practice as a year round swimmer in the San Francisco Bay: moving her body through cold water\, attuned to tides and currents\, releasing into the hypnotic push and pull. Her painting practice and bay swimming share the need for focused attention\, awareness of sensation\, and internal states. Each artwork\, like each swim\, is a search for wholeness\, presence\, and embodied learning. \nBio:\nEmily Shepard is a Bay Area painter\, born in Boston\, Massachusetts. She earned her MFA with distinction from the California College of the Arts where she received the Barclay Simpson Award. She has shown her work locally and nationally\, including the Crocker–Kingsley Exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. Currently she has three pieces on exhibit in “Voices without Boundaries” at the Sasse Museum of Art in Pomona\, CA. Shepard is a Kipaipai Fellow and member of the artist-run gallery\, Mercury 20 in Oakland\, CA. Her work is included in private and corporate collections. Shepard swims year round without a wetsuit in the San Francisco Bay. SUMMARY:Pat O’Connor: Reclaimed | Closing Reception and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Pat O’Connor\, “Winter Sun and Shadow\,” 2026\, 48” x 36” x 2”\, salvaged cardboard\, acrylic paint\, birch board \nPat O’Connor’s work has long explored the intersection of object\, time\, and narrative. Beginning with paper pulp castings over structures at a former World War II naval base\, O’Connor developed a sustained interest in materials marked by history. In her exhibit\, Reclaimed\, she is drawn to surfaces shaped by wear\, weather\, and works with cardboard salvaged from the streets\, recycling bins\, and packaging. Through folding\, layering\, stitching\, printing\, and painting\, she transforms these fragments and other seemingly incongruent materials into richly layered assemblages. Guided by shifts in patina and form\, O’Connor builds surfaces dense with histories\, lush harmonies\, and active surfaces. Cardboard\, humble and impermanent\, originates from trees. O’Connor links the material back to the natural world. In some works\, she introduces imagery of branches and tree forms\, creating both calm and unsettling dialogues between the material’s fragile present and its living origin. In a culture shaped by disposability\, O’Connor elevates overlooked materials\, inviting viewers to sense the stories embedded in ordinary things as well as imagine ways the industrial and natural worlds might endure together. \nBio:\nPat O’Connor is an artist whose practice spans drawing\, painting\, assemblage\, and site-responsive sculpture. Her work has been exhibited widely\, most recently at the de Young Museum in San Francisco\, Transmission Gallery in Oakland\, the Sasse Museum of Art in Pomona\, California\, and O’Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley. Her pieces are held in public and private collections\, including a public commission at the University of California\, San Francisco Medical Center. Pat received her BA in Painting and Drawing from UC Davis and pursued graduate study in textile arts at San Francisco State University. Honors include a San Francisco Foundation Grant\, the Robert Rauschenberg-hosted Power of Art Award from the Lab School of Washington\, D.C.\, and the Arts Educator of the Year Award from the San Francisco Unified School District. SUMMARY:Fragments of Belonging at GearBox Gallery
DESCRIPTION:GearBox Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of paintings by Dalit Fresco and sculpture by Jan Blythe in this two person show\, Fragments of Belonging. July 9 – August 15th. Blythe and Fresco share a similar journey of immigration\, the experience of which is ingrained in the process as well as the imagery of their work. Whether it’s personal items compiled into cultural forms or from memories carried across great distances\, past or present. \nDalit’s paintings draw personal memories from both real and imagined occurrences\, translating them into undeniable emotional views. Her investigations move from inward outward\, and from the specific towards wholeness. There is a longing that is inherently seeking cover\, shelter\, and solid ground. \nJan is unearthing similar longings by compiling\, assembling\, and weaving with both personal and found objects. These materials are seemingly mundane yet gain a new life\, form and meaning under her hands. The dialogue between the painted surfaces and the objects is synchronized in a shared language\, rhythm\, and symbol. \nGearbox Gallery is open Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays 12 – 5pm

SUMMARY:GearBox Gallery Artists’ Talk with Linda Ellinwood and Joy Every
DESCRIPTION:GearBox Gallery is hosting an artist talk with Field Notes artists Linda Ellinwood and Joy Every with reading by author Joanne Furio. Furio will also be moderating the talk. Join in on the lively conversation on Saturday\, June 13th\, 2pm \nAbout Linda Ellinwood:\nEllinwood’s sculptures are created completely from found natural materials. Each one is unexpected\, yet simple and evocative. It is evident that she has been working with these materials for many years\, developing a vocabulary \,building up a library of materials\, landscapes from which to cull; a lifetime of looking\, noticing and delighting in natural forms. Ellinwood’s creations are elegant in their simplicity yet manage to elicit an emotional response: delight\, humor\, contemplation\, disinterest. She has exhibited nationally\, her work is included incollections throughout the United States. She lives and works in Oakland. \nAbout Joy Every:\nJoy Every presents a series of photography-based mixed media works that emerge from direct observation of the natural world. Beginning with photographic impressions of landscape\, light\, and atmosphere\, her process unfolds through intuitive layering\, abstraction\, and mark making. These works do not document place\, but instead trace what lingers in the space between representation and memory\, where landscapes become internalized and reimagined. Through subtle shifts in color\, texture\, and light \,the work evokes horizons\, skies\, and terrain that feel at once recognizable and elusive—shaped as much by feeling as by geography. \n“Joy Every’s latest mixed media works on paper continue her exploration of the natural world through an intimate\, tactile lens. Embroidery introduces a measured\, meditative pace\, where each stitch becomes an act of reverence. The works feel simultaneously fragile and immersive\, inviting a closer exploration.”-Lori Austin\,Owner/Curator of Lori Austin Gallery\, Healdsburg\, CA \nJoy Every has exhibited nationally\, and internationally. Her work is included in public and private collections across the United States. including the Security and Exchange Commission and Embassy of Peru. She lives and works in Oakland \,California.

SUMMARY:Art Murmur First Friday at Werkshack
DESCRIPTION:Werkshack is pleased to present “Kummerspeck”\, recent Sculpture and Mixed Media work by Bay Area artists Kelly DeFayette and Cybele Gerachis. \nKummerspeck is a German word that translates to “grief bacon” — the weight gained from emotional overeating\, or\, more broadly\, the ways people absorb and deal with discomfort\, emotional confusion\, and uncertainty. \nThis show does not illustrate the term as much as it moves through its emotional atmosphere. Across sculpture\, painting\, and mixed media\, the work reflects making sense of creating amidst the pressure to adapt to a world constantly reshaping itself. \nIt also radiates humor\, sarcasm\, and material pleasure. The stubborn act of making something by hand while much around you feels out of human scale. There is no substitute for the act of making something – as a way to process\, archive\, feel\, and connect. \nThe exhibition invites viewers into that shared space between grief and pleasure\, vulnerability and spectacle — and asks what kind of meaning can still be built from the fragments around us – the scraps of paper or the bric-a-brac at the thrift store. \n Meet the artists during this Oakland Art Murmur First Friday Event!

SUMMARY:The Hidden Treasures of Stan Chan\, GearBox Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Hidden Treasures of Stan Chan\nMay 26 – July 3 2026\nArtist’s Reception: Saturday\, May 30 1 – 4pm\nArtist’s Talk: Saturday\, June 13\, 2pm with a reading by author Joanne Furio. This show is running Concurrently with Field notes \nGearbox Gallery is pleased to present the 2026 Inner Room juried show winner\, Stan Chan. Chan’s installation of artifacts\, writings and drawings creates an immersive experience that delves into a personal story of remembrance from his childhood in Oakland. This visual reading of objects and colorful bits gives the viewer a glimpse into our local past through the art of Stan Chan. \nChan says\, “Growing up in East Oakland my immigrant parents were able to buy a house in the 1950s. It was a Victorian house and it was my shelter from the outside world. When I was a kid\, I dug holes in the walls and in my mattress where I hid my treasures and through the years things accumulated in the nooks and crannies of the house.” It is from these memories that Chan’s installation of treasure boxes and colorful collages emerge. \nStan Chan\, is an artist living in San Francisco with deep roots in Oakland. Receiving his MA from CCAC\, Chan has shown in many solo and group shows locally and nationally including the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:Field Notes: Linda Ellinwood / Joy Every\, GearBox Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Field Notes – Linda Ellinwood / Joy Every\nMay 28 – July 3 2026 \nArtists’ Reception: Saturday May 30\, 1 – 4pm.\nArtists’ Talk: Saturday June 13\, 2pm with a reading by author Joanne Furio.\nThis show runs concurrently with The Hidden Treasures of Stan Chan\, GearBox Gallery’s 2026 Inner Room Gallery winner \nGearbox Gallery is pleased to present Field Notes\, an exhibition of new work by Oakland-based artists\, sculptor Linda Ellinwood and mixed-media artist Joy Every on view from May 28 through July 3\, 2026. The title Field Notes reflects Ellinwood and Every’s approach to art making: attentive\, provisional\, and deeply rooted in looking. Like notes taken in the field\, the works operate as records of experience other than conclusions. Familiar forms dissolve into abstraction as images are altered by time\, perception\, and the artists’ hands allowing space for ambiguity and personal reflection.. \nGearBox Gallery\n770 West Grand Avenue\nThursdays – Saturdays noon – 5pm

SUMMARY:Andrea Brewster\, Tara Esperanza\, Elizabeth Sher: Succulents\, Spirals\, Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Left to right: Tara Esperanza\, “Tenderness”\, 2024 acrylic on canvas\, 35” x 24”\, Elizabeth Sher\, “Layered Spiral #e (pink)”\, 2026\, oil\, acrylic and ink on Yupo\, 16” x 14”\, Andrea Brewster\, “Resemblance #2-Peony”\, 2026\, Digital print on aluminum\, 16” x 20”\, Photo courtesy of the artist. \nAndrea Brewster’s work transforms flowers into speculative\, non-biological forms that resemble flora yet are entirely constructed—part specimen\, part apparition. Printed on reflective aluminum\, images shift with light\, offering a quiet\, contemplative experience shaped by the distance between nature and its digital afterimage. \nTara Esperanza’s paintings reflect the quiet resilience of succulents as they adapt\, thrive\, and live in harmony. Rooted in community\, these forms support one another\, flourishing together as a collective force of nature. \nElizabeth Sher’s focus has turned to spirals\, first in rope\, then in wire\, and now in painted and drawn marks. This ongoing series “Spiraling Out of Control” visualizes a shared emotional landscape: the disorientation and instability many of us feel in these uncertain times. Yet within the spiral\, Sher finds a pulse of hope\, a reminder of cycles\, of return\, renewal\, and resilience. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, May 16\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, June 5\, 5 – 9 pm
