SUMMARY:Andrea Guskin: Signals Beneath The Surface
DESCRIPTION:The networks beneath our forest floors—where tree roots and mycorrhizal fungi share sustenance and signals through intertwined subterranean paths—served as a source of inspiration for Andrea Guskin’s exhibition\, Signals Beneath the Surface. This new work continues her exploration of scientific discovery as a metaphor\, using metal paintings and photographic processes to investigate themes of ancestry\, memory\, and interconnection.\nThread\, found objects\, and imprints of Guskin’s body on the metal paintings translate concealed activity into form\, mapping the connections that sustain life below ground and above it.\nWithin this exhibition\, she presents work from her recent project Local Roots\, a photo-based community arts project centered on ancestral relationships to herbs and spices\, and a new site-specific collaborative installation created with local artists Courtney Griffith and Yaminah Abdur-Rahim. \nBio:\nAndrea Guskin is a San Francisco Bay Area based artist working across the disciplines of photography\, sculpture\, and painting. She began drawing by pillaging her father’s office supplies for fine-tipped pens and yellow legal pads\, filling them with figures while lounging on a 1970s shag carpet in Kenosha\, Wisconsin. After studying painting at Antioch College in Ohio\, Guskin moved to New York City and became a part of the arts community on the Lower East Side. Since moving to the Bay Area in 2003\, she has exhibited her work throughout the state\, including at the Richmond Art Center\, BerkeleyArt Center\, and Red Poppy Art House. She graduated with an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Mills College at Northeastern University in April of 2023. Guskin lives in San Leandro with her husband and two sons. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, April 11\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, April 3\, May 1\, 5 – 9 pm\nJoin Andrea Guskin in a participatory activity centered around ancestry on First Friday\, April 3\, 6:30-7:30 pm \nImage: Andrea Guskin\, “Radial Expansion\,” Acrylic paint on Cinefoil\, 2026\, photo courtesy of the artist

SUMMARY:Andrea Brewster\, Tara Esperanza\, Elizabeth Sher: Succulents\, Spirals\, Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Left to right: Tara Esperanza\, “Tenderness”\, 2024 acrylic on canvas\, 35” x 24”\, Elizabeth Sher\, “Layered Spiral #e (pink)”\, 2026\, oil\, acrylic and ink on Yupo\, 16” x 14”\, Andrea Brewster\, “Resemblance #2-Peony”\, 2026\, Digital print on aluminum\, 16” x 20”\, Photo courtesy of the artist. \nAndrea Brewster’s work transforms flowers into speculative\, non-biological forms that resemble flora yet are entirely constructed—part specimen\, part apparition. Printed on reflective aluminum\, images shift with light\, offering a quiet\, contemplative experience shaped by the distance between nature and its digital afterimage. \nTara Esperanza’s paintings reflect the quiet resilience of succulents as they adapt\, thrive\, and live in harmony. Rooted in community\, these forms support one another\, flourishing together as a collective force of nature. \nElizabeth Sher’s focus has turned to spirals\, first in rope\, then in wire\, and now in painted and drawn marks. This ongoing series “Spiraling Out of Control” visualizes a shared emotional landscape: the disorientation and instability many of us feel in these uncertain times. Yet within the spiral\, Sher finds a pulse of hope\, a reminder of cycles\, of return\, renewal\, and resilience. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, May 16\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, June 5\, 5 – 9 pm

This show is running Concurrently with Field notes \nGearbox Gallery is pleased to present the 2026 Inner Room juried show winner\, Stan Chan. Chan’s installation of artifacts\, writings and drawings creates an immersive experience that delves into a personal story of remembrance from his childhood in Oakland. This visual reading of objects and colorful bits gives the viewer a glimpse into our local past through the art of Stan Chan. \nChan says\, “Growing up in East Oakland my immigrant parents were able to buy a house in the 1950s. It was a Victorian house and it was my shelter from the outside world. When I was a kid\, I dug holes in the walls and in my mattress where I hid my treasures and through the years things accumulated in the nooks and crannies of the house.” It is from these memories that Chan’s installation of treasure boxes and colorful collages emerge. \nStan Chan\, is an artist living in San Francisco with deep roots in Oakland. Receiving his MA from CCAC\, Chan has shown in many solo and group shows locally and nationally including the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:Field Notes: Linda Ellinwood / Joy Every\, GearBox Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Field Notes – Linda Ellinwood / Joy Every\nMay 28 – July 3 2026 \nArtists’ Reception: Saturday May 30\, 1 – 4pm.\nArtists’ Talk: Saturday June 13\, 2pm with a reading by author Joanne Furio.\nThis show runs concurrently with The Hidden Treasures of Stan Chan\, GearBox Gallery’s 2026 Inner Room Gallery winner \nGearbox Gallery is pleased to present Field Notes\, an exhibition of new work by Oakland-based artists\, sculptor Linda Ellinwood and mixed-media artist Joy Every on view from May 28 through July 3\, 2026. The title Field Notes reflects Ellinwood and Every’s approach to art making: attentive\, provisional\, and deeply rooted in looking. Like notes taken in the field\, the works operate as records of experience other than conclusions. Familiar forms dissolve into abstraction as images are altered by time\, perception\, and the artists’ hands allowing space for ambiguity and personal reflection.. \nGearBox Gallery\n770 West Grand Avenue\nThursdays – Saturdays noon – 5pm

SUMMARY:Art Murmur First Friday at Werkshack
DESCRIPTION:Werkshack is pleased to present “Kummerspeck”\, recent Sculpture and Mixed Media work by Bay Area artists Kelly DeFayette and Cybele Gerachis. \nKummerspeck is a German word that translates to “grief bacon” — the weight gained from emotional overeating\, or\, more broadly\, the ways people absorb and deal with discomfort\, emotional confusion\, and uncertainty. \nThis show does not illustrate the term as much as it moves through its emotional atmosphere. Across sculpture\, painting\, and mixed media\, the work reflects making sense of creating amidst the pressure to adapt to a world constantly reshaping itself. \nIt also radiates humor\, sarcasm\, and material pleasure. The stubborn act of making something by hand while much around you feels out of human scale. There is no substitute for the act of making something – as a way to process\, archive\, feel\, and connect. \nThe exhibition invites viewers into that shared space between grief and pleasure\, vulnerability and spectacle — and asks what kind of meaning can still be built from the fragments around us – the scraps of paper or the bric-a-brac at the thrift store. \n Meet the artists during this Oakland Art Murmur First Friday Event!

SUMMARY:GearBox Gallery Artists’ Talk with Linda Ellinwood and Joy Every
DESCRIPTION:GearBox Gallery is hosting an artist talk with Field Notes artists Linda Ellinwood and Joy Every with reading by author Joanne Furio. Furio will also be moderating the talk. Join in on the lively conversation on Saturday\, June 13th\, 2pm \nAbout Linda Ellinwood:\nEllinwood’s sculptures are created completely from found natural materials. Each one is unexpected\, yet simple and evocative. It is evident that she has been working with these materials for many years\, developing a vocabulary \,building up a library of materials\, landscapes from which to cull; a lifetime of looking\, noticing and delighting in natural forms. Ellinwood’s creations are elegant in their simplicity yet manage to elicit an emotional response: delight\, humor\, contemplation\, disinterest. She has exhibited nationally\, her work is included incollections throughout the United States. She lives and works in Oakland. \nAbout Joy Every:\nJoy Every presents a series of photography-based mixed media works that emerge from direct observation of the natural world. Beginning with photographic impressions of landscape\, light\, and atmosphere\, her process unfolds through intuitive layering\, abstraction\, and mark making. These works do not document place\, but instead trace what lingers in the space between representation and memory\, where landscapes become internalized and reimagined. Through subtle shifts in color\, texture\, and light \,the work evokes horizons\, skies\, and terrain that feel at once recognizable and elusive—shaped as much by feeling as by geography. \n“Joy Every’s latest mixed media works on paper continue her exploration of the natural world through an intimate\, tactile lens. Embroidery introduces a measured\, meditative pace\, where each stitch becomes an act of reverence. The works feel simultaneously fragile and immersive\, inviting a closer exploration.”-Lori Austin\,Owner/Curator of Lori Austin Gallery\, Healdsburg\, CA \nJoy Every has exhibited nationally\, and internationally. Her work is included in public and private collections across the United States. including the Security and Exchange Commission and Embassy of Peru. She lives and works in Oakland \,California.

SUMMARY:Emily Shepard: In Flux | Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Emily Shepard\, “Pouring In\,” 2026\, 71” x 79”\, photo by Sibila Savage \nEmily Shepard’s large-scale abstract paintings pull viewers into an immersive\, otherworldly space — one of shifting depths\, interacting layers\, and arched forms that float like portals above restless water. Working on unstretched canvas\, she builds richly textured surfaces through gestural mark-making\, watery drips\, and stitched canvas shapes. Indecipherable loops of script speak to rhythm\, breath\, and cycles.\nShepard’s work is mirrored by her practice as a year round swimmer in the San Francisco Bay: moving her body through cold water\, attuned to tides and currents\, releasing into the hypnotic push and pull. Her painting practice and bay swimming share the need for focused attention\, awareness of sensation\, and internal states. Each artwork\, like each swim\, is a search for wholeness\, presence\, and embodied learning. \nBio:\nEmily Shepard is a Bay Area painter\, born in Boston\, Massachusetts. She earned her MFA with distinction from the California College of the Arts where she received the Barclay Simpson Award. She has shown her work locally and nationally\, including the Crocker–Kingsley Exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. Currently she has three pieces on exhibit in “Voices without Boundaries” at the Sasse Museum of Art in Pomona\, CA. Shepard is a Kipaipai Fellow and member of the artist-run gallery\, Mercury 20 in Oakland\, CA. Her work is included in private and corporate collections. Shepard swims year round without a wetsuit in the San Francisco Bay. The practice of cold-water swimming focuses her senses\, challenges her will\, and informs her art. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, July 3\, 5 – 9 pm\nArtists’ Closing Reception and Talk: Saturday\, July 25\, 3 – 5 pm
