DESCRIPTION:For August and September we are excited to feature UltraHive 4; a traveling art show with over 100 artists making original cd cover art! This vibrant and eclectic exhibition showcases artists from around the globe\, each contributing unique works that explore the CD cover as both canvas and concept. From reimagined album art to sculptural pieces crafted from actual CD cases\, the show celebrates the cultural legacy of physical media while pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. By transforming these once-ubiquitous objects into personal and provocative expressions\, the artists revive nostalgia\, challenge format\, and reframe the way we view music\, memory\, and material. Together\, their works create a dynamic visual mixtape that pays homage to the golden age of the compact disc—remixed for a new era. \nUltraHive 4 has recently shown at the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles. After showing here at FM Oakland\, it will then travel to Japan for display at the Tokyo Designfesta Gallery. Davis Senior Center Choir\, music conductor and leader Kenneth Little)\nThis is part of a series of NEXUS SFBay events including the Caleb Dowdell performance with his piece\, Our Prism of Dreams\, starting at 1:30 pm just downstairs  at Gearbox Gallery. See one or both at that galleries at 770 West Grand Ave in Oakland \nTransmission Gallery is pleased to present Fear Not\, recent work by William Rhodes. \nWilliam Rhodes’s sculptures on view incorporate objects that have been used\, inherited\, discarded\, or found with elements he has carved himself. Trained early on as a furniture maker\, he combines hand carved figures\, flames and snakes with objects collected from a family home\, photographs\, hardware\, tools\, and other remnants of everyday life. Neon words signal from some pieces. \nThe resulting works resemble shrines or memorials\, but they remain grounded in the ordinary. Religious symbols appear alongside household objects. A photograph might be surrounded by carved waves\, tools\, hardware\, animals\, or religious symbols. A suitcase can become an architectural space. A toilet becomes the base of an unexpected monument. Things with little apparent value are carefully incorporated into elaborate constructions\, their histories becoming part of the work.\n​\nRhodes is equally interested in people; family\, mentors\, and leaders\, as well as those who have been overlooked or treated as disposable\, recognizing and elevating their presence in his work. By giving attention to these lives\, enshrining and revering them\, he considers how value is assigned and who gets remembered. \nThe title Fear Not appears in the work as both a phrase and a kind of instruction. It can be read in relation to the religious imagery that runs throughout the sculptures\, but it also takes on a more personal meaning. To look closely at lives and objects that are easily dismissed is\, in its own way\, an act of resistance to that dismissal. \nAll are welcome to join us for the Artist’s Reception\, September 26th. DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents Night Watch\, a striking exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Gregory Rick that boldly reimagines history painting through the fractured lens of contemporary life. \nApocryphal yet deeply referential and incisive\, Rick’s compositions collapse past events with biblical and mythological imagery\, art-historical allusions\, and capitalist spectacle into hypersaturated scenes that are at once facetious and unsettling. A burning cross\, a feline maw\, a tree of serpents\, and tigers charging toward machine-gun fire populate a world where violence–and communal acts of resistance–appear both ancient and immediate. \nFigures clad in Fila jackets\, yellow Hokas\, and other recognizable markers of contemporary consumer culture anchor these frenetic compositions in the present. As a veteran\, citizen\, and subject\, Rick draws upon collective memory to confront the cognitive dissonance of navigating everyday life amid recurring cycles of violence\, surveillance\, and oppression. In works such as Night Watch (We Got Us)\, Rembrandt’s civic militia meets Picasso’s Guernica\, transforming the historical tableau into a contemporary cry for help and vision of mutual aid. \nA few of the works are painted and collaged on silk mesh\, their transparencies exposing the layers of their construction and underscoring history itself as an unstable\, assembled narrative. In Night Watch\, Rick contends with what it means to stay woke and on watch in the 2020s. \nNight Watch runs from September 30 to October 31\, 2026 with an opening reception Friday\, October 2 from 5-8pm.

Together\, these works invite us to explore the space between captivity and liberation\, to see differently\, and to imagine a world beyond systems of punishment. \nFriday\, October 2 | 1:00–9:00 PM \n1:00 PM | Gallery Opens\nEmpowerment Avenue’s inStudio will open its doors at 1:00 PM\, inviting visitors to experience The Distance Between: Traveling Beyond Count Time and spend time with the work throughout the afternoon. \nLive at inStudio\n6:00 PM | Panel Discussion: Black Yearning for Freedom \nAt 6:00 PM\, we will gather for a conversation exploring a continuing Black yearning for freedom and the ways artists carry memory\, history\, our bodies\, and our imaginations onto canvas and paper. \nMoving between histories of enslavement and confinement and the realities of incarceration today\, the conversation will consider art as a place to hold these experiences while also imagining beyond them. What does it mean to create from within systems of confinement without allowing confinement to define the limits of the imagination? What can Black creative practice teach us about freedom\, possibility\, and the worlds we have yet to make?\nThe conversation will feature exhibition artists Ray Williams Jr. and Alvin Smith\, alongside exhibition co-curator De’jon Joy.\nThe discussion will be moderated by Milan Drake\, Community Design Lead at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University (the d.school). \n7:00 PM | Live Performance by Inertia the Artist \nFollowing the conversation\, Inertia the Artist will offer a live performance in the gallery.\nInertia the Artist is an Oakland-based vocalist\, loop artist\, facilitator\, and somatic psychotherapist whose soulful music and sound work center healing\, transformation\, and social change.\nThe performance extends the evening’s exploration beyond the visual\, bringing voice\, sound\, body\, and collective experience into the exhibition space.

As a veteran\, citizen\, and subject\, Rick draws upon collective memory to confront the cognitive dissonance of navigating everyday life amid recurring cycles of violence\, surveillance\, and oppression. In works such as Night Watch (We Got Us)\, Rembrandt’s civic militia meets Picasso’s Guernica\, transforming the historical tableau into a contemporary cry for help and vision of mutual aid. \nA few of the works are painted and collaged on silk mesh\, their transparencies exposing the layers of their construction and underscoring history itself as an unstable\, assembled narrative. In Night Watch\, Rick contends with what it means to stay woke and on watch in the 2020s. \nNight Watch runs from September 30 to October 31\, 2026 with an opening reception Friday\, October 2 from 5-8pm.
