DESCRIPTION:Donald (Aldo) Farnsworth – Hands of the Maker: A Show of Hands\nAugust 6 – September 19\, 2026\nGallery Hours: Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 12 -5 pm\n​​​\nArtist’s Reception\nSaturday\, August 15th from 2-5 pm \nArtist’s Talk\nSaturday\, September 12th\, starting at 2 pm \nHands of the Maker: A Show of Hands presents twelve drawings by Aldo Farnsworth\, made with graphite\, quarried chalk\, and colored pigments on linen and hemp paper.  \nThe works focus on the hands of makers captured with close attention to intimate details: the nuance of gesture\, the particular way they hold a pencil or object\, often with glasses at hand. These quiet arrangements suggest drawing\, seeing\, measuring\, and making—the physical evidence of each subject’s creative work and daily life.  \nThe handmade paper\, with its deckle edges and distinctive felt-hair texture associated with Renaissance papers\, layers another history into these contemporary portraits. Farnsworth makes the paper himself\, raising worms to compost the linen\, beating the hemp fibers\, and forming each unique sheet\, connecting the hands depicted in the drawings to his own hand through the material. The paper carries the physical presence of the artist who made it\, just as the drawings carry the physical presence of the people they portray. \nArtists and makers represented in the drawings include Timothy Berry\, David Best\, Squeak Carnwath\, Guy Diehl\, Guillermo Galindo\, Mildred Howard\, Peter Koch\, Jerry Lin-Hsien Kung\, Kiki Smith\, Michael Wild\, Andrew Williams\, and Xiaoze Xie. The show is\, in a literal sense\, a show of hands—but also a portrait of artists through the things their hands reveal.  \nThese works were made possible by Magnolia Editions and the Magnolia Paper Lab with the assistance of Max Thill\, Tallulah Terryll\, Nicholas Price\, Alyssa Minadeo\, and Era Farnsworth. \nPlease join us for the Artist’s Reception\, Saturday\, August 15th\, 2-5 pm. DESCRIPTION:Daniel McClain: Lost and Found\nThrough September 12\, 2026\n​​​\nArtist’s Reception\nSaturday\, August 15th from 2-5 pm \nTransmission Gallery is pleased to present Lost and Found\, a solo exhibition comprised of recent paintings and framed drawings by Daniel McClain.  \nThe exquisite technical process at play in McClain’s paintings is elusive at first. With their striking imagery\, bold planes and graphic color\, they initially suggest collages assembled from found images\, fragments\, and printed material.  Only after spending time with them does it become clear that every element has been re-created by hand. What appears to be a collage is\, in fact\, a meticulous replication of one. A strip of masking tape turns out to be paint. A penciled note is drawn in graphite. A battered corner is painted. Printed text is hand-drawn graphite as well.  \nAt this point the scope of the work begins to become apparent. Every element has been carefully considered. Creases\, worn edges\, and the faint shadows separating one sheet of paper from another receive the same attention as an ocean\, an illustration\, or a section of chalkboard. By granting each part equal attention\, McClain transforms copies into objects with their own independent presence. \nThis transformation is ultimately the point. Replication is not the subject of these paintings but their method\, bringing images from different histories\, disciplines\, and moments into direct conversation. Each element alters the meaning of the others\, creating relationships that could not exist without this painstaking act of reconstruction. \n​An example is the recurring figure of Pinocchio. More than a literary reference\, Pinocchio becomes real not by perfectly imitating a human being\, but by accumulating experience\, making mistakes\, and developing judgment. In this sense\, he serves as a metaphor for the paintings themselves. They begin as copies\, but they do not remain copies. Through the process of their making and the experience of looking\, they become something else. \nFamiliarity with art history\, literature\, and broader questions of reality and mystery enriches the experience\, revealing subtle connections within each painting. Yet no specialized knowledge is required; simply following the rhythms of color\, shape\, and line offers rewards of its own. \nFour framed graphite drawings on found paper accompany the paintings referencing the work of artists Marcel du Champ\, Werner Herzog\, and William de Kooning as well as Patti Smith. Beautifully executed\, they extend the exhibition’s exploration of perception\, felt experience and the transformation of familiar objects.

DESCRIPTION:SLATE is pleased to present Hannah Franco: Poiesis\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by abstract artist Hannah Franco. Featuring ten new paintings\, Hannah Franco brings her once-hidden washes of color forward as the true subject of the work\, revealing a self that had long lived quietly beneath the surface. Honoring the power of softness and vulnerability\, Franco pays tribute to the often invisible and systemically undervalued domestic labor and love women have long contributed to their communities. \nFranco earned a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York City and studied fresco painting in Florence\, Italy\, now currently living and working in Oakland\, California. DESCRIPTION:Tara Esperanza\, Protected Radiance\, 2026\, acrylic on panel\, 12″ x 12″\, Photo courtesy of the artist \nWhether painted in California or Oaxaca\, the works in Close to Home begin with the same impulse: to slow down and look closely. Working on a more intimate scale than in her previous work\, Tara Esperanza found herself drawn to quiet moments of observation\, where familiar plants reveal unexpected beauty through color\, form\, and light.\nCreated between two places that have become part of her life\, these paintings are less about geography than about attention. Though rooted in different landscapes\, each painting is shaped by the same curiosity and sense of wonder inspired by the resilience and sculptural elegance of plants.\nFor many years\, succulents have been Esperanza’s way of exploring themes of adaptation\, diversity\, and endurance. Through this body of work\, the smaller scale invites viewers to slow down\, look closely\, and discover that what is closest to us often has the most to reveal. \nBio:\nTara Esperanza resides in Oakland\, California\, where succulents thrive year-round. When she is not painting\, she enjoys running and capturing images that later inspire her work. Esperanza earned a BFA in Painting\, graduating cum laude from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth\, and studied plein air painting in Brittany\, France. A representational painter inspired by nature\, she has dedicated years to portraying the remarkable beauty and diversity of succulents. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery in Oakland\, CA\, since 2020. Her work has been shown at the Women’s United Art Movement Virtual Gallery\, as well as numerous group exhibitions. In 2025\, Esperanza received Best of Show at the Annual National Juried Painting Exhibition at Emerald Springs Art Center in Oregon. Her paintings have been featured in Create! She creates artwork using cotton fabric\, wool batting\, dyes\, and machine stitching. \nBio:\nAfter retiring as a professor and department chair of Human Development and Women’s Studies at California State University East Bay\, Patricia Guthrie decided to actively engage in the visual arts. She began taking community-based art classes: drawing\, photography\, quilt making\, and printing on fabric. Quilt making and all its aspects has become her passion. Guthrie hopes her quilts encourage viewers to move beyond art that is merely pleasing to the eye to seek a deeper meaning.\nHer work has been shown nationally and internationally including Schweinfurth Memorial\, Art Center\, Auburn\, New York; International Quilt Museum\, Lincoln\, Nebraska; Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; and Tuch + Technik Museum\, Neumunster\, Germany. The paper carries the physical presence of the artist who made it\, just as the drawings carry the physical presence of the people they portray. \nArtists and makers represented in the drawings include Timothy Berry\, David Best\, Squeak Carnwath\, Guy Diehl\, Guillermo Galindo\, Mildred Howard\, Peter Koch\, Jerry Lin-Hsien Kung\, Kiki Smith\, Michael Wild\, Andrew Williams\, and Xiaoze Xie. The show is\, in a literal sense\, a show of hands—but also a portrait of these makers through the things their hands reveal.  \nThese works were made possible by Magnolia Editions and the Magnolia Paper Lab with the assistance of Max Thill\, Tallulah Terryll\, Nicholas Price\, Alyssa Minadeo\, and Era Farnsworth.\n​
