SUMMARY:Hannah Franco: Poiesis
DESCRIPTION:SLATE is pleased to present Hannah Franco: Poiesis\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by abstract artist Hannah Franco. Featuring ten new paintings\, Hannah Franco brings her once-hidden washes of color forward as the true subject of the work\, revealing a self that had long lived quietly beneath the surface. Honoring the power of softness and vulnerability\, Franco pays tribute to the often invisible and systemically undervalued domestic labor and love women have long contributed to their communities. \nFranco earned a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York City and studied fresco painting in Florence\, Italy\, now currently living and working in Oakland\, California. She has shown with Oxide Collective in San Francisco and is represented by SLATE Contemporary Gallery in Oakland. \nOpening Reception: September 12\, 4-6pm\nHannah Franco: Poises is on view at SLATE from September 4-October 3\, 2026. \nSLATE Contemporary Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am-5pm.

Their work traces histories of enslavement and confinement alongside the realities of incarceration today\, while carrying memory\, endurance\, and imagination toward something beyond them. Together\, these works invite us to explore the space between captivity and liberation\, to see differently\, and to imagine a world beyond systems of punishment. \nFriday\, October 2 | 1:00–9:00 PM \n1:00 PM | Gallery Opens\nEmpowerment Avenue’s inStudio will open its doors at 1:00 PM\, inviting visitors to experience The Distance Between: Traveling Beyond Count Time and spend time with the work throughout the afternoon. \nLive at inStudio\n6:00 PM | Panel Discussion: Black Yearning for Freedom \nAt 6:00 PM\, we will gather for a conversation exploring a continuing Black yearning for freedom and the ways artists carry memory\, history\, our bodies\, and our imaginations onto canvas and paper. \nMoving between histories of enslavement and confinement and the realities of incarceration today\, the conversation will consider art as a place to hold these experiences while also imagining beyond them. What does it mean to create from within systems of confinement without allowing confinement to define the limits of the imagination? What can Black creative practice teach us about freedom\, possibility\, and the worlds we have yet to make?\nThe conversation will feature exhibition artists Ray Williams Jr. and Alvin Smith\, alongside exhibition co-curator De’jon Joy.\nThe discussion will be moderated by Milan Drake\, Community Design Lead at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University (the d.school). \n7:00 PM | Live Performance by Inertia the Artist \nFollowing the conversation\, Inertia the Artist will offer a live performance in the gallery.\nInertia the Artist is an Oakland-based vocalist\, loop artist\, facilitator\, and somatic psychotherapist whose soulful music and sound work center healing\, transformation\, and social change.\nThe performance extends the evening’s exploration beyond the visual\, bringing voice\, sound\, body\, and collective experience into the exhibition space.

Together\, these works invite us to explore the space between captivity and liberation\, to see differently\, and to imagine a world beyond systems of punishment. \nSaturday\, October 3 | 12:00–5:00 PM\n12:00 PM | Gallery Opens \nOn Saturday\, inStudio will reopen for an afternoon of art\, conversation\, and community. \nOpen Flow: Community Dialogue\nThroughout the afternoon\, exhibition co-curators De’jon Joy and Christine Lashaw will host an open-flow community dialogue inside the gallery.\nRather than a traditional panel\, the gathering will create space for visitors to move through the exhibition\, ask questions\, sit in conversation\, and reflect together on the histories\, ideas\, and possibilities held within the work. \nCurrently incarcerated participating artists will also call into the gallery at various points throughout the day\, creating opportunities for visitors to hear directly from artists whose work they are encountering on the walls. \nThe weekend invites audiences not simply to view the exhibition\, but to spend time inside its questions: to consider what we have inherited\, what we have normalized\, and what becomes possible when Black artists are given space to imagine beyond captivity.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for William Rhodes’ talk with gospel choir performance by the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir\, music conductor and leader Kenneth Little\nSaturday\, Oct 3rd starting at 2 pm \nThis is part of a series of NEXUS SFBay events including the Caleb Dowdell performance with his piece\, Our Prism of Dreams\, starting at 1:30 pm just downstairs  at Gearbox Gallery\, performance about 15 minutes. William’s talk starts at 2 pm upstairs with the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir closing out the event with a Gospel Choir performance. See one or both at that galleries at 770 West Grand Ave in Oakland.  \nMore about Fear Not\, William Rhodes’ solo exhibition at Transmission Gallery: \nWilliam Rhodes’s sculptures on view incorporate objects that have been used\, inherited\, discarded\, or found with elements he has carved himself. Trained early on as a furniture maker\, he combines hand carved figures\, flames and snakes with objects collected from a family home\, photographs\, hardware\, tools\, and other remnants of everyday life. Neon words signal from some pieces. \nThe resulting works resemble shrines or memorials\, but they remain grounded in the ordinary. Religious symbols appear alongside household objects. A photograph might be surrounded by carved waves\, tools\, hardware\, animals\, or religious symbols. A suitcase can become an architectural space. A toilet becomes the base of an unexpected monument. Things with little apparent value are carefully incorporated into elaborate constructions\, their histories becoming part of the work.\n​\nRhodes is equally interested in people; family\, mentors\, and leaders\, as well as those who have been overlooked or treated as disposable\, recognizing and elevating their presence in his work. By giving attention to these lives\, enshrining and revering them\, he considers how value is assigned and who gets remembered. \nThe title Fear Not appears in the work as both a phrase and a kind of instruction. It can be read in relation to the religious imagery that runs throughout the sculptures\, but it also takes on a morepersonal meaning. To look closely at lives and objects that are easily dismissed is\, in its own way\, an act of resistance to that dismissal.
