SUMMARY:Andrew Catanese Solo Exhibition | I Watched Your Leaves Grow Silver in the Wind
DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents I Watched Your Leaves Grow Silver in the Wind\, an exhibition featuring paintings by Andrew Catanese. The exhibition explores ecologies of recollection\, as Catanese channels connections among places and individuals\, particularly those who linger only in memory. \nFor Catanese\, painting is a narrative medium that moves across time and space\, reshaping how we see the everyday world. Their canvases feature landscapes\, shifting weather\, animals\, and spectral figures\, each serving as a portal to distinct moments and memories the artist calls “slips” in time and place. Painting becomes a bridge to people and environs that have been lost\, abandoned\, or rediscovered. Gazes\, where they appear\, are slant\, unfocused. Animals sulk through forests\, searching\, unaware that they are being watched. Full figures\, with backs turned\, are ensconced in brambles\, alienating them from the viewer. Imbued with distance and uncertainty\, Catanese’s lush compositions swim in windswept\, haunting ambiguity. \nA mysterious and quiet spirituality permeates the work\, suggesting something just beyond reach. Catanese’s expressive use of color deepens the atmosphere\, intensifying the sense of connection and longing throughout the exhibition. Amid today’s uncertainty and division\, Catanese’s paintings remind us of our deep-rooted desire for kinship. These poetic works encourage reflection and uncover the bonds that persist\, even in the most turbulent times. \nI Watched Your Leaves Grow Silver in the Wind will run from August 6 to September 27\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Ultrahive4
DESCRIPTION:For August and September we are excited to feature UltraHive 4; a traveling art show with over 100 artists making original cd cover art! This vibrant and eclectic exhibition showcases artists from around the globe\, each contributing unique works that explore the CD cover as both canvas and concept. From reimagined album art to sculptural pieces crafted from actual CD cases\, the show celebrates the cultural legacy of physical media while pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. By transforming these once-ubiquitous objects into personal and provocative expressions\, the artists revive nostalgia\, challenge format\, and reframe the way we view music\, memory\, and material. Together\, their works create a dynamic visual mixtape that pays homage to the golden age of the compact disc—remixed for a new era. \nUltraHive 4 has recently shown at the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles. After showing here at FM Oakland\, it will then travel to Japan for display at the Tokyo Designfesta Gallery. SUMMARY:Hannah Franco: Poiesis
DESCRIPTION:SLATE is pleased to present Hannah Franco: Poiesis\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by abstract artist Hannah Franco. Featuring ten new paintings\, Hannah Franco brings her once-hidden washes of color forward as the true subject of the work\, revealing a self that had long lived quietly beneath the surface. Honoring the power of softness and vulnerability\, Franco pays tribute to the often invisible and systemically undervalued domestic labor and love women have long contributed to their communities. \nFranco earned a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York City and studied fresco painting in Florence\, Italy\, now currently living and working in Oakland\, California. She has shown with Oxide Collective in San Francisco and is represented by SLATE Contemporary Gallery in Oakland. \nOpening Reception: September 12\, 4-6pm\nHannah Franco: Poises is on view at SLATE from September 4-October 3\, 2026. \nSLATE Contemporary Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am-5pm.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception – Patricia Guthrie: Get Up Stand Up
DESCRIPTION:One purpose of art is to support and communicate political messages. Using color\, letters\, and shapes\, Patricia Guthrie’s abstract quilts deliver political messages relating to the government\, international relationships\, and global warming. She creates artwork using cotton fabric\, wool batting\, dyes\, and machine stitching. \nBio:\nAfter retiring as a professor and department chair of Human Development and Women’s Studies at California State University East Bay\, Patricia Guthrie decided to actively engage in the visual arts. She began taking community-based art classes: drawing\, photography\, quilt making\, and printing on fabric. Quilt making and all its aspects has become her passion. Guthrie hopes her quilts encourage viewers to move beyond art that is merely pleasing to the eye to seek a deeper meaning.\nHer work has been shown nationally and internationally including Schweinfurth Memorial\, Art Center\, Auburn\, New York; International Quilt Museum\, Lincoln\, Nebraska; Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; and Tuch + Technik Museum\, Neumunster\, Germany. This is Guthrie’s second solo show at Mercury 20 Gallery. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, October 10\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: October 2\, 5 – 9 pm

SUMMARY:Under The Thumb - Artist's Reception
DESCRIPTION:Artist’s Reception for the group exhibition at Werkshack Studios that brings together four artists to explore themes of oppressive systems\, power\, and control through glass and mixed media. \nWorking across diverse techniques including fusing\, painting\, stained glass\, pâte de verre\, and more\, each artist brings a distinct perspective to the ways power shapes our lives and communities. Glass becomes both medium and metaphor: beautiful yet fragile\, transparent yet obstructive\, resilient yet vulnerable. Together\, the works examine how systems of power are experienced differently across individuals and groups\, inviting us to consider who holds power\, who is affected by it\, and what it means to resist\, endure\, or transform it. \nArtists: Elin Christopherson\, Lynne-Rachel Altman\, Cricket\, Anne Wong \nGallery Hours: Saturday\, 1 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, September 19th\, 5 – 7pm \nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, September 4th and October 2nd\, 5 – 9:30 pm
