From this vantage point\, monsters take on a new inspiring role\, not to just scare us\, but to inform us.  So what can monsters teach us about our fears\, our society and beyond?\nThe Tiny Monster Show explores our fears so we can take a deeper look at what we’ve been suppressing and what we need to confront. \nFrom classical to political\, The Tiny Monster Show gives space to capture\, reveal\, and maybe conquer those elements that keep us frozen\nin fear and hopefully shine a light on what it means to be human. DESCRIPTION:Program & Event Overview\nCurrently on view at Empowerment Avenue’s inStudio in Oakland\, The Distance Between: Traveling Beyond Count Time brings together stories told through the work of Black currently and formerly incarcerated artists. Their work traces histories of enslavement and confinement alongside the realities of incarceration today\, while carrying memory\, endurance\, and imagination toward something beyond them. Together\, these works invite us to explore the space between captivity and liberation\, to see differently\, and to imagine a world beyond systems of punishment. \nSaturday\, October 3 | 12:00–5:00 PM\n12:00 PM | Gallery Opens \nOn Saturday\, inStudio will reopen for an afternoon of art\, conversation\, and community. \nOpen Flow: Community Dialogue\nThroughout the afternoon\, exhibition co-curators De’jon Joy and Christine Lashaw will host an open-flow community dialogue inside the gallery.\nRather than a traditional panel\, the gathering will create space for visitors to move through the exhibition\, ask questions\, sit in conversation\, and reflect together on the histories\, ideas\, and possibilities held within the work. \nCurrently incarcerated participating artists will also call into the gallery at various points throughout the day\, creating opportunities for visitors to hear directly from artists whose work they are encountering on the walls. \nThe weekend invites audiences not simply to view the exhibition\, but to spend time inside its questions: to consider what we have inherited\, what we have normalized\, and what becomes possible when Black artists are given space to imagine beyond captivity.

DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents Night Watch\, a striking exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Gregory Rick that boldly reimagines history painting through the fractured lens of contemporary life. \nApocryphal yet deeply referential and incisive\, Rick’s compositions collapse past events with biblical and mythological imagery\, art-historical allusions\, and capitalist spectacle into hypersaturated scenes that are at once facetious and unsettling. A burning cross\, a feline maw\, a tree of serpents\, and tigers charging toward machine-gun fire populate a world where violence–and communal acts of resistance–appear both ancient and immediate. \nFigures clad in Fila jackets\, yellow Hokas\, and other recognizable markers of contemporary consumer culture anchor these frenetic compositions in the present. As a veteran\, citizen\, and subject\, Rick draws upon collective memory to confront the cognitive dissonance of navigating everyday life amid recurring cycles of violence\, surveillance\, and oppression. In works such as Night Watch (We Got Us)\, Rembrandt’s civic militia meets Picasso’s Guernica\, transforming the historical tableau into a contemporary cry for help and vision of mutual aid. \nA few of the works are painted and collaged on silk mesh\, their transparencies exposing the layers of their construction and underscoring history itself as an unstable\, assembled narrative. In Night Watch\, Rick contends with what it means to stay woke and on watch in the 2020s. \nNight Watch runs from September 30 to October 31\, 2026 with an opening reception Friday\, October 2 from 5-8pm.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for William Rhodes’ talk with gospel choir performance by the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir\, music conductor and leader Kenneth Little\nSaturday\, Oct 3rd starting at 2 pm \nThis is part of a series of NEXUS SFBay events including the Caleb Dowdell performance with his piece\, Our Prism of Dreams\, starting at 1:30 pm just downstairs  at Gearbox Gallery\, performance about 15 minutes. William’s talk starts at 2 pm upstairs with the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir closing out the event with a Gospel Choir performance. See one or both at that galleries at 770 West Grand Ave in Oakland.  \nMore about Fear Not\, William Rhodes’ solo exhibition at Transmission Gallery: \nWilliam Rhodes’s sculptures on view incorporate objects that have been used\, inherited\, discarded\, or found with elements he has carved himself. Trained early on as a furniture maker\, he combines hand carved figures\, flames and snakes with objects collected from a family home\, photographs\, hardware\, tools\, and other remnants of everyday life. Neon words signal from some pieces. \nThe resulting works resemble shrines or memorials\, but they remain grounded in the ordinary. Religious symbols appear alongside household objects. A photograph might be surrounded by carved waves\, tools\, hardware\, animals\, or religious symbols. A suitcase can become an architectural space. A toilet becomes the base of an unexpected monument. Things with little apparent value are carefully incorporated into elaborate constructions\, their histories becoming part of the work.\n​\nRhodes is equally interested in people; family\, mentors\, and leaders\, as well as those who have been overlooked or treated as disposable\, recognizing and elevating their presence in his work. By giving attention to these lives\, enshrining and revering them\, he considers how value is assigned and who gets remembered. \nThe title Fear Not appears in the work as both a phrase and a kind of instruction. It can be read in relation to the religious imagery that runs throughout the sculptures\, but it also takes on a morepersonal meaning. To look closely at lives and objects that are easily dismissed is\, in its own way\, an act of resistance to that dismissal.

DESCRIPTION:Meet the artists of Big\, Small\, and Everything In Between and celebrate this group exhibition featuring five Bay Area muralists. Join us for an afternoon gathering and a closer look at how these artists bring the color\, energy\, and visual language of their public work into the gallery’s intimate setting. Free and open to the public. \nJulie Engelmann\, based in Half Moon Bay\, works across murals\, paintings\, and digital illustration. Using media ranging from acrylic on canvas to spray paint on large walls\, she creates highly detailed and often surrealistic imagery\, frequently drawing on historical themes and using color and composition to create new visual possibilities.  \nAmos Goldbaum is a San Francisco–based visual artist known for his signature line drawings\, which span canvases\, large-scale murals\, prints\, and apparel. Inspired by the places and everyday scenes around him\, his work combines multiple viewpoints\, angles\, and moments in time into cohesive compositions connected by a singular line. His murals can be found throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and in cities around the world\, including New York\, Los Angeles\, Seattle\, Tokyo\, and Kathmandu.  \nLiv Losee-Unger is a Bay Area muralist known for vibrant\, nature-inspired\, and community-centered art. With more than sixty public artworks completed across the United States and abroad\, her detailed and colorful murals transform spaces through stories of flora\, fauna\, femininity\, and human connection.  \nFernanda Martínez is an Oakland-based painter\, muralist\, and sculptor whose vibrant\, expressive work draws from memories and observations of nature. Born and raised in Mexico City\, she moved to the Bay Area in 2015\, where she has developed an experimental and intuitive practice exploring the emotional depth of color\, form\, pattern\, and texture. Her work spans painting\, sculpture\, murals\, and public art\, transforming her distinctive visual language across two- and three-dimensional forms. Martinez has exhibited her paintings and sculptures in galleries and has collaborated on numerous public art projects for businesses\, nonprofit organizations\, and community-focused and affordable housing developments.  \nDeirdre Weinberg is a multidisciplinary artist with deep ties to the San Francisco Bay Area\, working across murals\, public art\, and studio practice. Her evolving work currently focuses on climate change\, using a limited black-and-white palette to explore landscapes\, seascapes\, and airscapes with a sense of urgency and starkness. As a veteran\, citizen\, and subject\, Rick draws upon collective memory to confront the cognitive dissonance of navigating everyday life amid recurring cycles of violence\, surveillance\, and oppression. DESCRIPTION:One purpose of art is to support and communicate political messages. Using color\, letters\, and shapes\, Patricia Guthrie’s abstract quilts deliver political messages relating to the government\, international relationships\, and global warming. She creates artwork using cotton fabric\, wool batting\, dyes\, and machine stitching. \nBio:\nAfter retiring as a professor and department chair of Human Development and Women’s Studies at California State University East Bay\, Patricia Guthrie decided to actively engage in the visual arts. She began taking community-based art classes: drawing\, photography\, quilt making\, and printing on fabric. Quilt making and all its aspects has become her passion. Guthrie hopes her quilts encourage viewers to move beyond art that is merely pleasing to the eye to seek a deeper meaning.\nHer work has been shown nationally and internationally including Schweinfurth Memorial\, Art Center\, Auburn\, New York; International Quilt Museum\, Lincoln\, Nebraska; Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; and Tuch + Technik Museum\, Neumunster\, Germany. DESCRIPTION:Tara Esperanza\, Guardians\, 2026\, acrylic-on-panel\, 20” x 16”\, Photo courtesy of the artist \nWhether painted in California or Oaxaca\, the works in Close to Home begin with the same impulse: to slow down and look closely. Working on a more intimate scale than in her previous work\, Tara Esperanza found herself drawn to quiet moments of observation\, where familiar plants reveal unexpected beauty through color\, form\, and light.\nCreated between two places that have become part of her life\, these paintings are less about geography than about attention. Though rooted in different landscapes\, each painting is shaped by the same curiosity and sense of wonder inspired by the resilience and sculptural elegance of plants. For many years\, succulents have been Esperanza’s way of exploring themes of adaptation\, diversity\, and endurance. Through this body of work\, the smaller scale invites viewers to slow down\, look closely\, and discover that what is closest to us often has the most to reveal. \nBio:\nTara Esperanza resides in Oakland\, California\, where succulents thrive year-round. When she is not painting\, she enjoys running and capturing images that later inspire her work. Esperanza earned a BFA in Painting\, graduating cum laude from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth\, and studied plein air painting in Brittany\, France. A representational painter inspired by nature\, she has dedicated years to portraying the remarkable beauty and diversity of succulents. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery in Oakland\, CA\, since 2020. Her work has been shown at the Women’s United Art Movement Virtual Gallery\, as well as numerous group exhibitions. In 2025\, Esperanza received Best of Show at the Annual National Juried Painting Exhibition at Emerald Springs Art Center in Oregon. Her paintings have been featured in Create! Centered around themes of intimacy\, boundaries\, and embodied emotion\, each artist takes an individual approach to media\, scale\, and the capacity of the human form to be both a site of identity and a vessel of metaphor. Engaging in profound considerations of what it is to be human—our physicality\, sense of self\, relationships\, consciousness\, and creativity\, these artists invite us to engage with these shifting\, eternal questions and reflect on our own experiences—be they practical\, peaceful\, disturbing\, humorous\, fragmented\, spiritual\, or otherworldly. As individuals\, choices that begin with who and what to portray later manifest in stylistic and material communiquès that boldly and poetically reveal themselves to the world. Collectively\, the psychologically charged spectrum of the group reminds us of the myriad ways our sentience can be narrated. Like Anais Nin said\, “We don’t see things as they are\, we see them as we are.” \nBio:\nWith Present Figures\, Laura Malone expands her practice to curation. Malone invited four artists to show alongside her\, chosen for their unique and diverse approaches to representing the figure: two Southern California artists — Cindy Craig and Shannon Rae Fincke — and two from the Bay Area — Nina Katz and Heidi Brueckner. Collectively their work has been shown across the globe in Europe\, Asia\, and the United States. Malone’s artwork was featured in The Crocker Kingsley National Art Competition and included in “Disrupted Realism\,” juried by John Seed\, who wrote the book of the same name. DESCRIPTION:What story gets left behind when the world decides whose memory counts? Untold Stories is our attempt to connect the dots\, to trigger the memories that complete what’s been erased. \nAs truth seekers from many different walks of life\, we’ve made this exhibition a space to hold the true stories so often erased by a system that does not honor immigrants\, refugees\, Black Americans\, queer folks\, and those who carry the truth close. \nThis exhibition allows us to rest in the rememory that Toni Morrison left us in the pages of the untold stories she once uncovered. “Untold Stories” is our dedication to that work\, as ARTogether’s 2026 Artist-in-Residence Mentorship Cohort: Aylin Ayee\, Bronche Taylor\, Donny Phan\, Jacquie Verbal\, Ji Young Lee\, Kia Lat\, Sabri Tunca\, and Tea Sherman. \nOur work spans mixed media\, painting\, textile art\, installation\, and performance\, holding space for the stories that have not yet been told. We invite you to join us in dialogue about Untold Stories. \n**Everything related to this exhibition is fueled by human creativity; no artificial intelligence is condoned.
