L’Oeuvre Jinn – Selected Works by ‘Djinn’ Carl E. Lewis

With work in major museum collections including the National Museum of African American History and Culture at the Smithsonian ‘Djinn’ Lewis is known for his 1979 photographic work that captured 20×40 foot live, dynamic {jissereu} laser projections. Lewis’s adaptability within the vast array of artistic mediums has allowed for an extensive career of artistic play. Included within this exhibition are works ranging across traditional media and styles, Black&White silver gelatin abstract photographs and jazz portraits to digitally manipulated laser imagery, multi-faceted self portrait constructs, and representations incorporating sumi-e and surface treatments such as chigari-e, goldleafing and eggshell. The combined effect of varying techniques provides a balance to the technological production of many of the works.

Old to New; the reflection of Humankind in our interactions and objects we create; mythos, metaphysics, iconography and sexuality; all are arcs occurring within the context of l’Oeuvre Jinn.
