SUMMARY:Night Watch // Gregory Rick
DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents Night Watch\, a striking exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Gregory Rick that boldly reimagines history painting through the fractured lens of contemporary life. \nApocryphal yet deeply referential and incisive\, Rick’s compositions collapse past events with biblical and mythological imagery\, art-historical allusions\, and capitalist spectacle into hypersaturated scenes that are at once facetious and unsettling. A burning cross\, a feline maw\, a tree of serpents\, and tigers charging toward machine-gun fire populate a world where violence–and communal acts of resistance–appear both ancient and immediate. \nFigures clad in Fila jackets\, yellow Hokas\, and other recognizable markers of contemporary consumer culture anchor these frenetic compositions in the present. As a veteran\, citizen\, and subject\, Rick draws upon collective memory to confront the cognitive dissonance of navigating everyday life amid recurring cycles of violence\, surveillance\, and oppression. In works such as Night Watch (We Got Us)\, Rembrandt’s civic militia meets Picasso’s Guernica\, transforming the historical tableau into a contemporary cry for help and vision of mutual aid. \nA few of the works are painted and collaged on silk mesh\, their transparencies exposing the layers of their construction and underscoring history itself as an unstable\, assembled narrative. In Night Watch\, Rick contends with what it means to stay woke and on watch in the 2020s. \nNight Watch runs from September 30 to October 31\, 2026 with an opening reception Friday\, October 2 from 5-8pm.

SUMMARY:Artist's Talk - Ellen Bepp: The Ghosts We Carry
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for Ellen Bepp’s Artist’s Talk\, Saturday\, October 31st\, staring at 2 pm with a traditional Japanese drum and flute procession. \nEllen will discuss the 10 pieces on view in the gallery reflecting on the legacy of the mandatory relocation and confinement of Japanese Americans during WW II and its aftermath\, with a keen awareness of current events. \nMore than 120\,000 people of Japanese descent were remanded to these camps in a wave of fear that swept America in response to attacks on Pearl Harbor\, including Heart Mountain in Wyoming\, where Bepp’s family was incarcerated. \nIncorporating fragments of familial writing\, traditional textiles\, imbedded text and Japanese imagery\, Bepp’s work reflects on the xenophobia\, racial slurs and casual taunts aimed at Asian Americans as well as the pain and despair of the camps. Beyond the fear and loss\, emerges the powerful story of resilience and perseverance that sustained detainees through their experience and in resuming their place as autonomous citizens. A thoughtful examination of the work\, standing with the elemental history of the objects and absorbing the words\, honors that journey.

SUMMARY:Paul Thompson’s “West Wild: American Culture” RECEPTION
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second reception of Paul Thompson’s latest drawings/paintings in his show entitled “West Wild: American Culture.”\n*One free beer for anyone who attends wearing a cowboy hat! \nFor October/November FM Oakland is excited to host the recent works by local Berkeley native Paul Thompson. Thompson’s work focuses on the romance and excitement of the wild west as he plays with paint\, line\, brushwork\, and composition to depict various scenes and portraits. His imagery highlights a range of cowboy life\, as it shows the somber loneliness of ranching\, to the rowdy and rough “fight or die” culture of bar fights and shootouts. Within that range one underlying aspect remains: his love for the wild west. \nPaul Thompson: Life of a Cowboy\n“I always played cowboys and indians with my brother as a kid \, and our father loved westerns. He would often play with us and eventually lived in the middle of the Nevada desert. We fantasized being cowboys and when we went to Nevada\, I enjoyed meeting real cowboys. It is still romantic and engaging to visit old western towns and imagine living as one. As an adult\, I took a tour of old western towns dressed as a cowboy. My mother used to draw with us and encouraged us to draw things that we imagined\, so I have been drawing and painting western themes ever since. I don’t make art for money. It is my therapy and as my mother says\, we share a healthy addiction.” \nOctober 2nd – November 28th\, 2026\nArt Murmur Receptions:\nFirst Friday\, November 6th\, 5-10pm

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Material As Witness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk for Material As Witness\, curated by Rena Tom. This exhibit explores the photograph as object\, with its own material sensibility and narrative. The artists in the exhibition engage in image-making\, in a truly hands-on sense\, to subvert (or amplify) the power attributed to photos as documentary evidence and bearers of truth. \nThe talk will begin around 6:30\, with time for a Q&A after!

SUMMARY:Artist Talk – Leah Korican: DOILoveYou Too
DESCRIPTION:Leah Korican\, pinwheel \, 2026\, acrylic\, holes\, on card\, 4″ x 4″ photo courtesy of the artist \nLeah Korican’s installation is part of her ongoing DOILoveYou series and is a variation on a piece created for the Nashville International Airport\, which was installed 2020-2022. It celebrates anonymous women\, crocheting and creating\, making doilies and antimacassars\, and the meditative aspects of their repetitive gestures. This work says let’s not merely make decor — let’s take up space. The cut paper drapes across the ceiling and plays with light and shadow\, and brings the viewer into a place of both reverie and exhilaration. \nBio:\nLeah Korican is a visual artist and writer based in Oakland\, CA. She has a BA from UC Berkeley and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited nationally\, including at the Richmond Art Center\, Bedford Gallery\, and Triton Museum\, among others. Her public art commissions include a large-scale\, site-specific cutout at the Nashville International Airport and permanent artworks for Kehilla Community Synagogue in Piedmont\, California and Rumsey Engineers in Oakland. She is an award winner in the 2026 Guild of American Paper Cutters exhibition “Cutting East to West” at the Heritage Asian Art Museum in Chicago\, Illinois. This is her third solo exhibition at Mercury 20 Gallery. \nOctober 23 – November 28\, 2026\nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 24\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm

SUMMARY:Artist Talk – Jill McLennan: harm_less
DESCRIPTION:Jill McLennan\, Walter\, 900 years old\, watercolor\, collage\, ink\, 26″x20″. photo by artist \nJill McLennan’s work gives voice to the harmless\, reflecting on the federal government’s decision to rescind the definition of harm (2026) as it applies to the protection of animals and their habitats\, listed under the Endangered Species Act (1975). In her art\, she depicts animals adapting\, inventing new ways to thrive amidst human impact. Using sumi ink\, a brush\, and mulberry paper\, she paints mammals\, birds\, amphibians\, plants\, trees\, and rivers. Then\, tearing the paper\, she applies these images to wood panels. Adding watercolor and handmade paper\, she creates a transformation from reality to wonder. McLennan states\, “The animals are here alongside us\, they have always been here\, and it is our duty to ensure that they remain\, that their habitat is here on earth for generations to come. May my art be a message to harm less\, a cry to the present and a hope for the future.” \nBio:\nJill McLennan creates paintings\, collages and prints inspired by her surroundings and the stories that she collects. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery since 2007. She is an active member of her neighborhood\, Jingletown Arts\, Business + Community (JABC)\, organizing Open Studios as well as beautification projects. She recently printed a series of linoleum blocks with poems\, telling stories of migration and climate change\, through a residency at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley\, CA. McLennan has completed two public art projects: Jingletown Birds at 401 Derby and Emeryville Perspectives at 65th and Christie Streets. Both are cut steel fences depicting the local shoreline with birds\, designed by McLennan and executed by local metal fabricators. Her work was accepted to the deYoung Open in 2020 and 2023. As an artist and teacher\, she is deeply invested in protecting her environment\, inspiring the youth\, and spreading hope and joy into the world. \nOctober 23 – November 28\, 2026\nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 24\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm

SUMMARY:Artist Talk – Andrea Brewster: Draft
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Brewster\, Draft 9\, 2026\, giclee print\, woven vellum. 12″ x 12″\, photo courtesy of the artist. \nAndrea Brewster’s new body of work\, Draft\, begins with the fundamental structure of weaving: warp and weft\, whose interlacing creates both fabric and an underlying grid. She approaches the grid not as a rigid system\, but as a living structure capable of variation\, interruption\, rhythm\, and ambiguity. The work draws from weaving drafts\, diagrams that function as instructions for generating complex patterns\, resembling a form of pre-digital code. The term “draft” also refers to an initial idea or work in progress\, connecting structure with imagination and instruction with image. This connection between weaving and digital systems is central to Brewster’s thinking. Although digitally constructed\, these pieces retain the appearance of hand-drawn marks\, creating a tension between material and virtual\, order and improvisation. Through line\, color\, repetition\, and interruption\, Brewster explores the relationship between visible patterns and the structures beneath them. \nBio:\nAndrea Brewster is a multidisciplinary artist who investigates the intersection of nature\, fiber art\, and technology through intricate forms and layered textures. Brewster earned a B.A. in Sculpture from Pomona College and an M.F.A. in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute. A 1993 NEA grant recipient\, she has exhibited widely in the San Francisco Bay Area\, with solo shows at Mercury 20\, The Lab\, and Southern Exposure\, as well as group exhibitions at Metal Haus Gallery\, Chandra Cerrito Contemporary\, The Oakland Museum\, and the Peninsula Museum. Her work has been featured in fiber art exhibitions in Ireland and the U.S. She has participated in the Djerassi Resident Artist Program\, and in 2025\, her AI work appeared at Load Gallery\, Barcelona\, and in the book Neo Botanica. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery since 2020. \nOctober 23 – November 28\, 2026\nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 24\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm

SUMMARY:Nicole Irene Anderson // Land Figures
DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents Land Figures\, Nicole Irene Anderson’s second solo exhibition of landscape paintings and drawings with the gallery. \nKnown for her haunting California landscapes\, Nicole Irene Anderson renders subjects not as static portraits but as living atmospheres—shifting\, flickering\, and at times nearly dissolving into their environments. These forms become little islands unto themselves\, bound not by topography but by the emotional weather of their surroundings. Her work stirs with an uncanny\, near-hallucinatory stillness\, drawing us into moments where the familiar becomes spectral and the personal\, mythic. \nIn Anderson’s world\, the human condition is not a singular state but a diffuse\, mercurial experience. Our disparate and illusory natures seek to know each other in the darkness. The artist’s subjects—sometimes solitary\, sometimes accompanied—are lanterns in the fog. They search for connection\, and occasionally\, they find it in ways we do: in familiarity\, in strangeness\, in memory\, and the mirrors of perception. Her work suggests that this kind of connection\, fragile and radiant\, is possible only when we open ourselves to the ache of vulnerability. To witness the illusion of stillness in an entropic universe. \nTo describe Nicole Irene Anderson as simply a painter is to understate the force majeure she embodies in the studio. She mines the emotional terrain with an unrelenting commitment\, refusing sentimentality in favor of something sharper\, truer. Her hyperrealities are not polished simulations but cracked and flickering truths formed in the crucible of lived experience. They are a response to a world that often feels unreal—and a defiant claim that feeling\, in all its terror and tenderness\, is real. \nThis is not escapism. It is a radical kind of noticing. \nI’d like to believe her singular ability to reconstitute contemporary landscapes—both internal and external —was born from her formative time here on the Central Coast. A terrain too stark and too honest to allow for illusion. There is a coastal realism that imprints itself on those who grow up alongside its fog-drenched cliffs and fractured light. It teaches you to see things for what they are\, even when they hide. Anderson never stopped looking. Her paintings speak the visual language of that upbringing: attuned to absence\, lit by empathy\, edged with mystery. \nIn the lineage of artists who collapse the boundaries between place\, psyche\, and spirit\, Anderson is carving out her own topography—one that is deeply rooted\, relentlessly curious\, and wholly her own. \nBy Charles Smith \nLand Figures runs November 21\, 2026 to January 9\, 2027. \nAn opening reception will be held Saturday\, November 21 from 3-5pm.

SUMMARY:Andrea Brewster: Draft
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Brewster\, Draft 1\, 2026\, giclee print\, woven vellum\, 10″ x 10″\, photo courtesy of the artist \nAndrea Brewster’s new body of work\, Draft\, begins with the fundamental structure of weaving: warp and weft\, whose interlacing creates both fabric and an underlying grid. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 24\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, November 7\, 3 – 5 pm
