SUMMARY:Not Heavy: Pacific Rim Sculptors
DESCRIPTION:Transmission Gallery is pleased to announce NOT HEAVY\, an exploration of lightness celebrating sculpture that uplifts the spirit or defies gravity in form or feeling\, curated by Transmission Gallery Owner/Director\, Ruth Santee\, from work submitted by members of Pacific Rim Sculptors. \nArtists selected include George-Ann Bowers\, Walter Bruszewski\, Cheryl Coon\, Dale Eastman\, Jane Grimm\, Karl X. Hauser\, Terry Kreiter\, Elizabeth Medrano\, Margaret Michel\, Jann Nunn\, Mary Curtis Ratcliff\, Lucy Snow\, Kline Swonger\, Ruth Tabancay\, Kim Thoman\, and Lynne Todaro. \nPhysically\, Not Heavy may refer to works that are literally lightweight: airy constructions\, suspended forms\, delicate materials\, or pieces that create the illusion of lightness despite their scale. Conceptually\, the theme invites a break from the solemn or burdensome\, instead embracing work that is buoyant\, playful\, warm\, whimsical\, uplifting\, or even humorous. At Transmission Gallery plushies\, plastic\, steel wood\, wire and clay showcase a surprising range of sculptural interpretations of weight\, balance\, and buoyancy. Heavyweight whimsy\, seriously light-weight work\, and unexpected materials expand on the concept. \nPacific Rim Sculptors (PRS) is a Chapter of the International Sculpture Center (publisher of Sculpture magazine). Founded on the beliefs that cultural vitality and artistic diversity contribute to a healthy society\, the organization aims to increase public awareness of sculpture by promoting public and private exhibits\, and through education and outreach programs.

SUMMARY:House / Hold
DESCRIPTION:GearBox Gallery\nHouse / Hold\nFeaturing artists: Laura Van Duren and Mittie Cuetara\nDates: December 11\, 2025- January 17\, 2026\nReception: Saturday\, December 13\, 1-4 pm\nArtist’ Talk: Saturday\, January 10\, 2pm \nGearBox Gallery is pleased to present House/Hold\, featuring GearBox Gallery artist\nMittie Cuetara and guest artist Laura Van Duren.\nLaura Van Duren and Mittie Cuetara share a sensitivity to how architecture informs our human experience. Laura’s sculptures work through the physicality of form—playful\, visceral structures that illuminate the body’s influence on the mind\, embracing a deeply corporeal sensibility. Mittie’s paintings\, by contrast\, explore psychological space through slightly abstracted interior scenes\, where domestic tension gathers in shadows\,\nthresholds\, and doorways. While Laura builds outward from the tangible presence of\nbodies\, Mittie draws viewers inward to the charged quiet of domestic environments.\nCuetara’s work begins inside- slightly skewed dreamlike interiors act as metaphors for the body\, exploring the tension\, comfort\, resistance\, and pull of her shifting relationship to domesticity.\nCuetara is drawn to the friction between independence and belonging\, ambition and\nhome. The house becomes a shell and an identity—a container for contradictory desires.\nThe interiors she paints aren’t pristine; their meaning comes from their histories. Rooms bear the imprint of lives lived\, and doorways recur as thresholds of change\, marking our hesitation before the unfamiliar.\nHouse/Hold reflects this pause—the moment before transformation. Through these\nspaces\, she explores the house as an extension of the self: a site of memory\, conflict\,\nvulnerability\, and possibility.\nIn House/Hold\, Van Duren navigates the complexities of support systems—those that\ncan feel uprooted and unsteady\, even as they are built back up through collective\npersistence. Through chairs and sculptural forms\, the work examines the interwoven\nissues of housing instability\, community support\, and resilience amid our shifting political reality.\nSwollen ceramic pieces stride forward\, precariously balanced on wheels\, nozzles\, and cobbled-together chairs\, illustrating a narrative of collective effort and adaptive repair.\nThis pieced-together community becomes both vulnerable and resilient\, emphasizing\nthat real stability and shelter are created not alone\, but through interconnected acts of\ncare\, ingenuity\, and shared endurance. The installation considers how support is\nmade—and remade—together.\nAbout the Artists:\nMittie Cuetara grew up in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. As the daughter of an architect\, she’s always been drawn to the particular interiors and strange paths that humans create for themselves. Graduating from the Boston Museum school\, she moved to the Bay Area\, where she wrote and illustrated several children’s books\, then spent several years teaching art. Since receiving her MFA in 2022 from Mills college\, she has been showing her acrylic paintings and sculptural work at shows around the Bay Area. She joined Gearbox Gallery in 2024.\nLaura Van Duren is an interdisciplinary artist based in Oakland\, California\, recognized for her innovative approach to ceramics\, and mixed-media sculpture. Her practice often\nmerges drawing\, ceramics\, glycerin soap\, and recycled materials\, reflecting a\ncommitment to experimentation and abstraction. She works with the Peter Voulkos\nfamily helping to manage the archival aspect of his collection which has had a profound influence on her creative process.\nVan Duren’s work has been exhibited at major institutions across the San Francisco Bay Area\, including the Crocker Museum (as part of the feminist exhibition Making Moves)\, Sonoma Museum of Art\, Southern Exposure\, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art\, and Berkeley Art Center. She is dedicated to arts education\, teaching ceramics and sculpture as an adjunct professor at several community colleges. Her achievements in the field include residencies\, such as the Open Studio residency at Haystack in Maine (2023) and a 2025 residency at Dream Farm Commons Gallery in Oakland. Notably\, her work has been acquired by The Crocker Art Museum.\nVan Duren holds a BFA in drawing from Carnegie Mellon University and she completed her MFA in sculpture at San Francisco State University in 2017.\nGearBox Gallery’s Opening Reception for Mittie Cuetara and Laura Van Duren’s\nHouse/Hold will be Saturday\, December 13th\, 1-4pm All are welcome.\nAbout Gearbox Gallery:\nGearBox Gallery is an artist-run contemporary art gallery dedicated to showcasing the work of its members and a broad range of regional contemporary guest artists\, fostering community and education through intellectual and cultural exchange focused on the visual arts. We are located at 770 West Grand Avenue in Oakland\, California.

In this exhibition\, time is marked through the body\, through ritual\, through the slow processes of making\, and through the traces we leave behind. The 41 works chosen from over 600 entries\, map the rhythms of aging\, grief\, regeneration\, and ecological change\, revealing how memory\, matter\, and attention connect. Across diverse mediums\, time becomes tangible\, layered through repetition\, captured in the traces left behind\, and illuminated in cycles of loss and renewal.\nMany of the artists in Mapping Time explore the body as an archive\, mapping lived experience through physical traces\, marks of illness\, healing\, vulnerability\, and endurance. Mapping Time invites viewers to slow down\, to witness how acts of marking\, remembering\, and remaking give shape to our memories in time\, reminding us that our stories unfold within larger cycles of transformation. \nMinoosh Zomorodinia is an Iranian-born interdisciplinary artist\, educator\, and curator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. SUMMARY:ON MATERIAL GROUND – A Group Show by Andrea Guskin\, Monika Mayer\, Caity Salamanca
DESCRIPTION:From left: Monika Mayer\, Soft Sculpture #11\, 2025\, Inner tubes and zip ties\, 33” x 14” x 4”\, Caity Salamanca\, Untitled\, Collage Landscape\, 2025\, mixed media on canvas mounted on board\, 8”x 8”\, Andrea Guskin\, Blue Roots\, 2025\, Cyanotype on cotton\, 8.5” x 11” (Photos courtesy of the artists) \nOn Material Ground brings together three Mercury 20 artists whose practices are rooted in the exploration of materials\, form\, and process\, which serves as the foundation from which concepts and ideas emerge. \nAndrea Guskin’s practice moves across the disciplines of photography\, sculpture\, and painting to create objects\, images\, and spaces where the familiar converses with the existential. Through layering\, ripping\, and transforming ordinary materials–spices\, foil\, thread\, wool– her work explores ancestry\, memory\, and our methods for seeking knowledge. \nMonika Mayer’s practice is rooted in an ongoing dialogue of working with everyday materials like inner tubes\, canvas\, paint\, and found objects. Guided by an intuitive\, process-driven approach\, she lets new forms surface organically. Through play and transformation\, her work uncovers the quiet rhythms and unexpected possibilities within the familiar. \nCaity Salamanca embraces experimentation\, slicing apart large repurposed canvases to create intimate landscapes. Guided by the willingness to take risks and the liberating act of cutting into older work\, she opens new creative pathways. Through this transformative process\, Salamanca uncovers a series of landscapes that emerge as a surprising\, unexpected discovery. \nGallery Hours: Fri & Sat\, 12–5 pm (or by appointment)\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, January 10\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: February 6\, 5 – 9 pm

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: ON MATERIAL GROUND
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Guskin\, Monika Mayer\, Caity Salamanca\nON MATERIAL GROUND \nOn Material Ground brings together three Mercury 20 artists whose practices are rooted in the exploration of materials\, form\, and process\, which serves as the foundation from which concepts and ideas emerge. \nGallery Hours: Fri & Sat\, 12–5 pm (or by appointment)\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: February 6\, 5 – 9 pm \nImage from left: Monika Mayer\, Soft Sculpture #11\, 2025\, Inner tubes and zip ties\, 33” x 14” x 4”; Andrea Guskin\, Blue Roots\, 2025\, Cyanotype on cotton\, 8.5” x 11”; Caity Salamanca\, Untitled\, Collage Landscape\, 2025\, mixed media on canvas mounted on board\, 8”x 8”. Included in the exhibition are works by James Aarons\, Susana Arias\, Michelle Gregor\, Margaret Keelan\, Mattie Leeds\, Peggy Loudon\, Kris Marubayashi\, Lisa Reinertson\, Claudia Tarantino\, and Laura Van Duren. Through this collection\, viewers are invited to consider how vessels can carry not only physical contents\, but also cultural meaning\, memory\, and personal expression. \nVessel noun.\n1a: A craft for traveling on water\, a watercraft bigger than a rowboat; a ship or boat. An airship.\nb: A hollow or concave utensil\, a container (such as a cask\, bottle\, kettle\, cup\, or bowl) for holding something. A cup\, bowl\, pitcher\, or vase\, used for holding liquids or other contents.\nc: A human that serves as a receptacle for a spiritual entity to manifest\, acting as a spokesperson for that deity. A person into whom some quality (such as grace) is infused.\nd: A vessel is a hollow tube or canal that circulates body fluids\, most commonly referring to blood vessels (arteries\, veins\, and capillaries) that transport blood\, oxygen\, and nutrients throughout the body and remove waste. SUMMARY:Tony Klass Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Tony Klaas Memorial\nJanuary 17th\n1-5pm \nShow runs through Jan 30th\nThe Grand Gallery\n560 2nd St.\, Oakland \nWed-Thurs 12pm to 5pm\nFriday – 11am to 7pm\nSunday 11am – 5pm \nSee the captivating work of artist/muralist Tony Klaas. From his early murals in North Beach with artist Billy Weber to encounters with iconic figures in Barcelona’s Plaza Real Klaas’s colorful journey unfolded on canvas. \nKlaas studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland before venturing to Barcelona in 1972 where he dove into surrealism. It was here that Klaas meet both Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso exploring this art form with the masters. \nPsychedelics played a significant role in the creation of many of Klass’s work allowing him to zero in on color and shapes. He also identified with Van Gogh as both struggled with their ability to harness the realities of life. As a testament that art saves lives\, Klaas explained that revisiting his issues through art helped him to find solutions. \nTony Klaas passed away in 2025.

SUMMARY:Three Girls – Christine Ferrouge
DESCRIPTION:Three Girls\, a solo exhibition with new paintings by Christine Ferrouge \nGallery Hours: Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays noon-5pm; and by appointment\nExhibition Dates: January 22\, 2026 – February 28\, 2026\nClosing Reception: Saturday\, February 28\, 2026\, 3-5pm \nCalifornia painter\, Christine Ferrouge makes paintings about the social and intrapersonal complexity of girlhood. Inside these paintings\, her daughters and their friends have been growing up before our eyes. Now the girls are older. They are not little girls. They are teenagers. Ferrouge’s teens are not exactly what you might expect. They are not the weak\, crazy\, second class we often negatively associate with “teens”. They have the strength\, dignity\, and psychological presence that she has always shown us in her paintings of girls. They are still the “women-to-be” that you could always see simmering below the surface of these determined and confident characters. \nThese works are a mother’s view of her teens: their lounging around\, napping frequently\, and the quiet social understanding between the them. You can feel the unique and tight knit bond-especially connecting the girls- and the looks they give you when you catch them in that sacred space. “When you enter the gallery and stand in front of one of these scenes\, you are present in their space\, but you are not part of their circle.” –Ferrouge\nThis is a well established thread in Ferrouge’s work. After the Costume Party (2019)\, Desert Picnic (2020)\, After the Fires (2021)\, Watching/Waiting (2023)\, and Girls in the Mirror (2024) all give the viewer the feeling that you are in their space. The artist first observed exclusivity and girl power in her daughters and their little friends when they were just 5 and 6 years old\, which inspired The Huddle (Ferrouge\, 2016). To Ferrouge’s surprise\, many young men found that painting scary. \n“[Ferrouge] portrays complex humans\, not cute\, one-dimensional beings; her paintings are seriously insightful images…”\nBetty Ann Brown\, PhD \n“…painter Christine Ferrouge\, whose ongoing portraiture practice engages a particular thread of art history in which women paint women\, girls\, and girls on the cusp of womanhood—celebrating their insider’s perspective on subject’s inner lives\, and their outsider’s perspective on the culture that surrounds them.”\n–Shana Nys Dambrot\, Art Critic\nLos Angeles\, 2024 \nIn contrast to the seven feet high oil paintings that dominate the room\, Ferrouge also has small works that capture the gestural\, figurative narratives on an intimate scale. Since beginning to paint and exhibit some small paintings last year\, they have become popular and easy to collect.\nPlease visit the gallery to experience this work in person: \nGearBox Gallery\n770 West Grand Ave.\nOakland\, CA 94612\n510-290-9660\ninfo@gearboxgallery.com\ngearboxgallery.com\nThursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays noon-5pm

SUMMARY:California Unseen\, Along the Hills of the Central Valley
DESCRIPTION:The California Central Valley is more than the giant open fields we cross when driving down from San Francisco to Los Angeles via Interstate 5. It is a place of beauty and complexity\, a land of contrast undergoing rapid changes: a housing frenzy\, an alternance of droughts and floods\, vibrant yet struggling migrant communities\, immense fields producing half of the fruits and vegetables of the US\, all surrounded by stunning natural beauty. This place has always fascinated artists (from Dorothea Lange to Jack Kerouac\, Robert Dawson\, and Stephen Johnson) and keeps doing so today. By featuring certain works done in the 1930s by Dorothea Lange and putting them into perspective with today’s works\, this show will be an invitation to explore the Central Valley over a century.\nThis East Bay Photo Collective exhibition\, curated by Claire Maen\, brings together 6 photographers from the East Bay\, Fresno\, and Los Angeles (Ryan McIntosh\, Stephen Johnson\, Noah Gottesman\, Michael Behlen\, Steve Molnar\, and Claire Maen) who explore this land of extremes on film: Polaroid\, small\, medium and large format. In addition\, William Peterson\, from Sacramento\, will show his 3D ceramics with aerial views of the agricultural landscape. The show will be visible from February to March 2026 at the EBPCO Gallery in Oakland\, CA.

SUMMARY:Open First Friday: Between Here and There – Wayne Armstrong
DESCRIPTION:Manna Gallery is pleased to present Between Here and There\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Oakland-based artist Wayne Armstrong. Grounded in a lifelong fascination with the California landscape\, these recent works reflect Armstrong’s ongoing exploration of the state’s rich visual possibilities. Using color\, pattern\, and spatial divisions unique to the region\, his paintings move between the memory of a place and the lived reality of a space. Infused with warmth\, humor\, and imagination\, the work reflects Armstrong’s enduring sense of curiosity and gratitude—“How lucky am I\,” he writes\, “to always find something in these environments to inspire me.” \nJanuary 10 – February 14\, 2026\nGallery Hours: Saturdays\, 12-5 pm & First Fridays\, 5-8 pm

SUMMARY:Oakland Art Murmur / First Friday – Mapping Time: A Juried Show
DESCRIPTION:Mapping Time shows artists who approach time as a living material\, something that accumulates\, decays\, heals\, and transforms. Across diverse mediums\, time becomes tangible\, layered through repetition\, captured in the traces left behind\, and illuminated in cycles of loss and renewal. \nMany of the artists in Mapping Time explore the body as an archive\, mapping lived experience through physical traces\, marks of illness\, healing\, vulnerability\, and endurance. Her work explores the complex relationships between humans\, nature\, and technology. Through psychogeography and daily rituals\, she documents time and movement across landscapes to challenge colonial histories\, redefine borders\, and highlight ecological interconnectedness. Zomorodinia has received numerous awards and residencies\, including the YBCA 100\, Lucas Artists Fellowship\, Andy Warhol Foundation\, Kala Media Fellowship Award\, Headlands Center for the Arts\, Djerassi Residency\, Recology Artist Residency\, Alternative Exposure Award\, and California Arts Council grants. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as the Asian Art Museum\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts\, San Francisco Arts Commission\, Berkeley Art Center\, Pori Art Museum (Finland)\, and Nevada Museum of Art. It has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle\, Hyperallergic\, KQED\, and SFWeekly. SUMMARY:Oakland Art Murmur / First Friday – On Material Ground
\nGallery Hours: Fri & Sat\, 12–5 pm (or by appointment) \nImage from left: Monika Mayer\, Soft Sculpture #11\, 2025\, Inner tubes and zip ties\, 33” x 14” x 4”; Andrea Guskin\, Blue Roots\, 2025\, Cyanotype on cotton\, 8.5” x 11”; Caity Salamanca\, Untitled\, Collage Landscape\, 2025\, mixed media on canvas mounted on board\, 8”x 8”. SUMMARY:Christine Meuris: Wellspring
DESCRIPTION:Using silk thread and simple motifs\, Christine Meuris has created a series of semi-transparent weavings that reflect feelings of harmony\, joy\, flow\, and wholeness.\nIn 2023\, Meuris began studying weaving as a way to deepen and ground her creative practice. Working with weaving teacher Travis Meinolf\, at the Richmond Art Center and at his eponymous weaving school in Marin County\, Meuris was influenced by Meinolf’s judgment-free and open minded approach to weaving\, a practice that can otherwise become exacting.\nAfter a period of experimentation\, Meuris settled on a simple weaving technique — using plain weave with supplemental weft to construct imagery. In her weavings\, Meuris returns to the font of her creativity\, the work that steadies her in calm or tumultuous times\, repeating simple steps to build something greater than the sum of its parts. \nBio:\nMercury 20 member Christine Meuris lives and works in Berkeley\, CA. She has shown her work in solo and group shows locally\, notably at the Berkeley Art Center\, San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles\, and Mercury 20 Gallery\, and in group shows around the U.S. She was a resident artist at Kala Institute in 2023 and was the inaugural Digital Artist in Residence at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles (SJMQT) in 2020. Her work has appeared in the Surface Design Journal\, Fiber Art Now\, and the Textile Society of America News\, and is included in the collections of the City of Berkeley\, SJMQT\, Kaiser Permanente\, and Four Seasons Residences SF\, as well as several private collections. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, February 21\, 3 – 5 pm\, artist talks at 4:00 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, March 6\, 5 – 9 pm\nWeaving Demonstrations: Saturdays\, February 14\, March 7\, 14\, 21 @ 1:30 \nImage: Christine Meuris\, “Return\, Poppy\, Rain\,” 2025\, silk\, dimensions variable\, photo credit: Mark Serr

SUMMARY:Dr. KC Rosenberg: Raised by Wolves
DESCRIPTION:Dr. KC Rosenberg creates her work on the floor of her studio\, where raw canvas and paper are walked on\, soaked\, and marked through movement and touch. Her background in printmaking and textiles informs a material-driven approach that values impressions\, repetition\, and layered surfaces as records of action. Lines and bands of color function as spaces where stories can unfold. In her newest series\, Rosenberg introduces narrative fragments into these abstract forms. Images and words appear like passing thoughts or half-remembered moments—sometimes humorous\, sometimes dark—forming a personal visual vocabulary. Using collage\, she brings together abstraction\, text\, and imagery to create poetic connections rather than fixed meanings. The work invites viewers to slow down\, look closely\, and make their own associations. At its core\, Rosenberg’s practice explores how memory\, language\, and the body intersect\, transforming process itself into a form of storytelling. \nBio:\nBorn in Marin County\, California\, Dr. KC Rosenberg was raised in a bohemian household shaped by intellectual rigor and domestic improvisation; while her mother worked and studied law\, Rosenberg and her siblings were cared for by a shifting network of caretakers\, an environment whose chaos fostered early strategies of invention through imagined companions\, substitute characters\, and close observation of animal behavior. In 2021\, medical complications during the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a significant shift in her practice toward abstraction\, reducing narrative certainty and temporarily setting aside personal history\, which later returned as material rather than subject; these formative experiences now register in her work as form and emotional traces rather than representation. Rosenberg has exhibited with Patricia Sweetow Gallery\, and her work is held in the collections of the California Arts Council and the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles. She holds an Ed.D. and conducts social research on collective mentorship systems among artists. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, February 21\, 3 – 5 pm\, artist talks at 4:00 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, March 6\, 5 – 9 pm \nImage: KC Rosenberg\, “Men Named Merle\,” 2025 from Raised By Wolves series\, 2026\, Acrylic paint and yarn on wood panel\, 8″ x 8″\, photo courtesy of the artist

SUMMARY:Body\, Quilt\, Animal – Pat Guthrie\, Jill McLennan\, Sara Lisch
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition in The Backroom at Mercury 20 Gallery brings together a human figure\, an abstract quilt\, and a series of animal forms. The figure is constructed from layered hand-cut paper\, the quilt from fabric and dye\, and the animals through collage\, drawing\, and painting. Each piece is arranged through an intuitive search for balance and rhythm\, allowing form and pattern to emerge through the process of making rather than through planning or narrative. Across the works as a whole\, pattern\, repetition\, and process play a central role\, shaping how the images are built and experienced. Collage\, mixed media\, and fabric function as constructive tools\, with materials layered\, pieced\, and assembled over time. Rather than describing specific scenes or narratives\, the works emphasize accumulation\, surface\, and structure as the means through which the images take form. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, February 21\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, March 6\, 5 – 9 pm \nImages: Left to right\, clockwise: Sara Lisch\, “Oceanic\,” 2026\, Layered Paper\, 36 x 48 inches; Pat Guthrie\,”Rolling Virus\,”2026\, Textile\, 78 x 77 inches; Jill McLennan\,”Natures Critters\,” 2025\, coyote\, ink\, watercolor\, collage on wood panel\, 8 x 8 inches\, photos courtesy of the artists
