SUMMARY:Artists’ Reception – Julie Engelmann\, Amos Goldbaum\, Liv Losee-Unger\, Fernanda Martínez\, & Deirdre Weinberg
DESCRIPTION:Meet the artists of Big\, Small\, and Everything In Between and celebrate this group exhibition featuring five Bay Area muralists. Join us for an afternoon gathering and a closer look at how these artists bring the color\, energy\, and visual language of their public work into the gallery’s intimate setting. Free and open to the public. \nJulie Engelmann\, based in Half Moon Bay\, works across murals\, paintings\, and digital illustration. Using media ranging from acrylic on canvas to spray paint on large walls\, she creates highly detailed and often surrealistic imagery\, frequently drawing on historical themes and using color and composition to create new visual possibilities. \nAmos Goldbaum is a San Francisco–based visual artist known for his signature line drawings\, which span canvases\, large-scale murals\, prints\, and apparel. Inspired by the places and everyday scenes around him\, his work combines multiple viewpoints\, angles\, and moments in time into cohesive compositions connected by a singular line. His murals can be found throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and in cities around the world\, including New York\, Los Angeles\, Seattle\, Tokyo\, and Kathmandu. \nLiv Losee-Unger is a Bay Area muralist known for vibrant\, nature-inspired\, and community-centered art. With more than sixty public artworks completed across the United States and abroad\, her detailed and colorful murals transform spaces through stories of flora\, fauna\, femininity\, and human connection. \nFernanda Martínez is an Oakland-based painter\, muralist\, and sculptor whose vibrant\, expressive work draws from memories and observations of nature. Born and raised in Mexico City\, she moved to the Bay Area in 2015\, where she has developed an experimental and intuitive practice exploring the emotional depth of color\, form\, pattern\, and texture. Her work spans painting\, sculpture\, murals\, and public art\, transforming her distinctive visual language across two- and three-dimensional forms. Martinez has exhibited her paintings and sculptures in galleries and has collaborated on numerous public art projects for businesses\, nonprofit organizations\, and community-focused and affordable housing developments. \nDeirdre Weinberg is a multidisciplinary artist with deep ties to the San Francisco Bay Area\, working across murals\, public art\, and studio practice. Her evolving work currently focuses on climate change\, using a limited black-and-white palette to explore landscapes\, seascapes\, and airscapes with a sense of urgency and starkness. Whether creating work in public spaces or the studio\, Weinberg seeks to build community\, connect with viewers\, and inspire conversation\, reflection\, and new perspectives. \nSeptember 26 – October 31\, 2026\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, October 3\, 2-4 pm\nOakland Style Week Art Tour: Saturday\, October 10\, 11 am-2 pm\nGallery Hours: Saturdays\, 12-5 pm & First Fridays\, 5-8 pm

SUMMARY:Fear Not - William Rhodes Artist's Talk with Gospel Choir Performance
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for William Rhodes’ talk with gospel choir performance by the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir\, music conductor and leader Kenneth Little\nSaturday\, Oct 3rd starting at 2 pm \nThis is part of a series of NEXUS SFBay events including the Caleb Dowdell performance with his piece\, Our Prism of Dreams\, starting at 1:30 pm just downstairs at Gearbox Gallery\, performance about 15 minutes. William’s talk starts at 2 pm upstairs with the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir closing out the event with a Gospel Choir performance. See one or both at that galleries at 770 West Grand Ave in Oakland. \nMore about Fear Not\, William Rhodes’ solo exhibition at Transmission Gallery: \nWilliam Rhodes’s sculptures on view incorporate objects that have been used\, inherited\, discarded\, or found with elements he has carved himself. Trained early on as a furniture maker\, he combines hand carved figures\, flames and snakes with objects collected from a family home\, photographs\, hardware\, tools\, and other remnants of everyday life. Neon words signal from some pieces. \nThe resulting works resemble shrines or memorials\, but they remain grounded in the ordinary. Religious symbols appear alongside household objects. A photograph might be surrounded by carved waves\, tools\, hardware\, animals\, or religious symbols. A suitcase can become an architectural space. A toilet becomes the base of an unexpected monument. Things with little apparent value are carefully incorporated into elaborate constructions\, their histories becoming part of the work.\n\nRhodes is equally interested in people; family\, mentors\, and leaders\, as well as those who have been overlooked or treated as disposable\, recognizing and elevating their presence in his work. By giving attention to these lives\, enshrining and revering them\, he considers how value is assigned and who gets remembered. \nThe title Fear Not appears in the work as both a phrase and a kind of instruction. It can be read in relation to the religious imagery that runs throughout the sculptures\, but it also takes on a morepersonal meaning. To look closely at lives and objects that are easily dismissed is\, in its own way\, an act of resistance to that dismissal.

SUMMARY:inStudio: The Distance Between: Traveling Beyond Count Time
DESCRIPTION:Program & Event Overview\nCurrently on view at Empowerment Avenue’s inStudio in Oakland\, The Distance Between: Traveling Beyond Count Time brings together stories told through the work of Black currently and formerly incarcerated artists. Their work traces histories of enslavement and confinement alongside the realities of incarceration today\, while carrying memory\, endurance\, and imagination toward something beyond them. Together\, these works invite us to explore the space between captivity and liberation\, to see differently\, and to imagine a world beyond systems of punishment. \nSaturday\, October 3 | 12:00–5:00 PM\n12:00 PM | Gallery Opens \nOn Saturday\, inStudio will reopen for an afternoon of art\, conversation\, and community. \nOpen Flow: Community Dialogue\nThroughout the afternoon\, exhibition co-curators De’jon Joy and Christine Lashaw will host an open-flow community dialogue inside the gallery.\nRather than a traditional panel\, the gathering will create space for visitors to move through the exhibition\, ask questions\, sit in conversation\, and reflect together on the histories\, ideas\, and possibilities held within the work. \nCurrently incarcerated participating artists will also call into the gallery at various points throughout the day\, creating opportunities for visitors to hear directly from artists whose work they are encountering on the walls. \nThe weekend invites audiences not simply to view the exhibition\, but to spend time inside its questions: to consider what we have inherited\, what we have normalized\, and what becomes possible when Black artists are given space to imagine beyond captivity.

SUMMARY:Tiny Monster Show ~ Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Whether or not you like monsters\, one has to admit\, most of us like a good scare now and then. The word Monster derives from the Latin monstrum\, itself derived ultimately from the verb moneo (“to remind\, warn\, instruct\, or foretell”). From this vantage point\, monsters take on a new inspiring role\, not to just scare us\, but to inform us. So what can monsters teach us about our fears\, our society and beyond?\nThe Tiny Monster Show explores our fears so we can take a deeper look at what we’ve been suppressing and what we need to confront. \nFrom classical to political\, The Tiny Monster Show gives space to capture\, reveal\, and maybe conquer those elements that keep us frozen\nin fear and hopefully shine a light on what it means to be human. Hopefully\, you’ll experience a moment of laughter in recognition that you are more powerful than the monster wants you to think. \nDanny Soracco\, Spike Milliken\, Karl Hauser\, Diane Komater\, Paulette Traverso\, Artemis Jones\, Nicole Garcia\, Case Conover\, Doug Bloch\, Terry Furry\, Doug Rhodes\, Zachary Sweet\, Debra Kay Burger\, Jeremy Ian Meyer\, John Colle Rogers\, Patti Goldstein\, Jessica Dalton\, Denise Owen\, Ash Volkanic\, Linda Dittes\, Denise Deleray

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Material as Witness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception for Material as Witness\, curated by Rena Tom! \nMaterial as Witness explores the photograph as object\, with its own material sensibility and narrative. Objects can trigger powerful emotions and memories\, and materials carry their own associations based on tactile properties or cultural significance. The artists in the exhibition engage in image-making\, in a truly hands-on sense\, to subvert (or amplify) the power attributed to photos as documentary evidence and bearers of truth.

SUMMARY:Under The Thumb
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition at Werkshack Studios brings together four artists to explore themes of oppressive systems\, power\, and control through glass and mixed media. \nWorking across diverse techniques including fusing\, painting\, stained glass\, cast glass and more\, each artist brings a distinct perspective to the ways power shapes our lives and communities. Glass becomes both medium and metaphor: beautiful yet fragile\, transparent yet obstructive\, resilient yet vulnerable. Together\, the works examine how systems of power are experienced differently across individuals and groups\, inviting us to consider who holds power\, who is affected by it\, and what it means to resist\, endure\, or transform it. \nArtists: Elin Christopherson\, Lynne-Rachel Altman\, Cricket\, Anne Wong \nGallery Hours: Saturday\, 1 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, September 19th\, 5 – 7pm \nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: Friday\, September 4th and October 2nd\, 5:30 – 9:30 pm

DESCRIPTION:opening at MIGHTY MIGHTY STUDIO\nOct 2nd 5:00 – 8:00pm\nin conjunction with Nexus and MOAD. \nSelena Scott’s work explores Black identity through themes of Afropessimism\, colonialism\, and the enduring structures that shape contemporary understandings of Blackness.\nbio: Selena Scott is a British artist and graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art\, based in San Francisco. Her research-led practice examines colonial memory\, the formation of identity through history\, and the afterlives of Caribbean exploitation. Working primarily across oil painting and textiles\, Scott brings portraiture\, symbolism and archival research together to examine the relationship between rage and repair. What does it mean to create from within systems of confinement without allowing confinement to define the limits of the imagination? What can Black creative practice teach us about freedom\, possibility\, and the worlds we have yet to make?\nThe conversation will feature exhibition artists Ray Williams Jr. and Alvin Smith\, alongside exhibition co-curator De’jon Joy.\nThe discussion will be moderated by Milan Drake\, Community Design Lead at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University (the d.school). \n7:00 PM | Live Performance by Inertia the Artist \nFollowing the conversation\, Inertia the Artist will offer a live performance in the gallery.\nInertia the Artist is an Oakland-based vocalist\, loop artist\, facilitator\, and somatic psychotherapist whose soulful music and sound work center healing\, transformation\, and social change.\nThe performance extends the evening’s exploration beyond the visual\, bringing voice\, sound\, body\, and collective experience into the exhibition space.

SUMMARY:Artist’s Reception – William Rhodes: Fear Not
DESCRIPTION:William Rhodes: Fear Not\nSeptember 17 – October 31\, 2026 \nArtist’s Reception: Saturday\, September 26th from 1-4 pm \nAll are welcome! Please join us for the Artist’s Reception for William Rhodes’ solo exhibition\, Fear Not\, in conjunction with the reception for concurrent exhibition\, Ellen Bepp: The Ghosts We Carry. Greet the artists\, check out the exhibitions and enjoy the light refreshments and lively conversations. \nLook for the “ART” Building at 770 West Grand Ave and come upstairs to Transmission Gallery for this event. \n Free street parking on West Grand Ave and in the neighborhood south of West Grand. \nMore about Fear Not: \nWilliam Rhodes’s sculptures on view incorporate objects that have been used\, inherited\, discarded\, or found with elements he has carved himself.

SUMMARY:Under The Thumb – Artist’s Reception
DESCRIPTION:Artist’s Reception for the group exhibition at Werkshack Studios that brings together four artists to explore themes of oppressive systems\, power\, and control through glass and mixed media.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Present Figures – Curated by Laura Malone
DESCRIPTION:Nina Kath\, Enigma in Shadow\, Oil on Canvas\, 56” x 40”\, Photo courtesy of the artist \nPresent Figures brings together five California painters whose works exist within the figurative language of portraiture\, simultaneously expanding and disrupting it. Centered around themes of intimacy\, boundaries\, and embodied emotion\, each artist takes an individual approach to media\, scale\, and the capacity of the human form to be both a site of identity and a vessel of metaphor. Engaging in profound considerations of what it is to be human—our physicality\, sense of self\, relationships\, consciousness\, and creativity\, these artists invite us to engage with these shifting\, eternal questions and reflect on our own experiences—be they practical\, peaceful\, disturbing\, humorous\, fragmented\, spiritual\, or otherworldly. As individuals\, choices that begin with who and what to portray later manifest in stylistic and material communiquès that boldly and poetically reveal themselves to the world. Collectively\, the psychologically charged spectrum of the group reminds us of the myriad ways our sentience can be narrated. Like Anais Nin said\, “We don’t see things as they are\, we see them as we are.” \nBio:\nWith Present Figures\, Laura Malone expands her practice to curation. Malone invited four artists to show alongside her\, chosen for their unique and diverse approaches to representing the figure: two Southern California artists — Cindy Craig and Shannon Rae Fincke — and two from the Bay Area — Nina Katz and Heidi Brueckner. Collectively their work has been shown across the globe in Europe\, Asia\, and the United States. Malone’s artwork was featured in The Crocker Kingsley National Art Competition and included in “Disrupted Realism\,” juried by John Seed\, who wrote the book of the same name. Malone currently resides in Oakland\, CA and has been a member of Mercury 20 since 2023. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, October 10\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: October 2\, 5 – 9 pm

SUMMARY:Opening Reception – Tara Esperanza: Close to Home
DESCRIPTION:Tara Esperanza\, Mango-Sunset\, 10”x10” on wood-panel\, Photo courtesy of the artist \nWhether painted in California or Oaxaca\, the works in Close to Home begin with the same impulse: to slow down and look closely. Working on a more intimate scale than in her previous work\, Tara Esperanza found herself drawn to quiet moments of observation\, where familiar plants reveal unexpected beauty through color\, form\, and light. Created between two places that have become part of her life\, these paintings are less about geography than about attention. Though rooted in different landscapes\, each painting is shaped by the same curiosity and sense of wonder inspired by the resilience and sculptural elegance of plants.\nFor many years\, succulents have been Esperanza’s way of exploring themes of adaptation\, diversity\, and endurance. Through this body of work\, the smaller scale invites viewers to slow down\, look closely\, and discover that what is closest to us often has the most to reveal. \nBio:\nTara Esperanza resides in Oakland\, California\, where succulents thrive year-round. When she is not painting\, she enjoys running and capturing images that later inspire her work. Esperanza earned a BFA in Painting\, graduating cum laude from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth\, and studied plein air painting in Brittany\, France. A representational painter inspired by nature\, she has dedicated years to portraying the remarkable beauty and diversity of succulents. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery in Oakland\, CA\, since 2020. Her work has been shown at the Women’s United Art Movement Virtual Gallery\, as well as numerous group exhibitions. In 2025\, Esperanza received Best of Show at the Annual National Juried Painting Exhibition at Emerald Springs Art Center in Oregon. Her paintings have been featured in Create! Magazine\, New Visionary Magazine\, and other publications\, and are held in private collections throughout the United States. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, October 10\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: October 2\, 5 – 9 pm

SUMMARY:Artist’s Talk – Donald (Aldo) Farnsworth: Hands of the Maker
DESCRIPTION:Donald (Aldo) Farnsworth Artist’s Talk\nHands of the Maker: A Show of Hands\n\nSaturday\, September 12th\, starting at 2 pm \nPlease join us for the free event with Aldo’s Talk starting at 2 pm on Saturday\, September 12th.\nAldo will discuss his explorations in paper making and his twelve drawings on view at Transmission Gallery. \nHands of the Maker: A Show of Hands presents twelve drawings by Aldo Farnsworth\, made with graphite\, quarried chalk\, and colored pigments on linen and hemp paper. \nThe works focus on the hands of makers captured with close attention to intimate details: the nuance of gesture\, the particular way they hold a pencil or object\, often with glasses at hand. These quiet arrangements suggest drawing\, seeing\, measuring\, and making—the physical evidence of each subject’s creative work and daily life. \nThe handmade paper\, with its deckle edges and distinctive felt-hair texture associated with Renaissance papers\, layers another history into these contemporary portraits. Farnsworth makes the paper himself\, raising worms to compost the linen\, beating the hemp fibers\, and forming each unique sheet\, connecting the hands depicted in the drawings to his own hand through the material. The paper carries the physical presence of the artist who made it\, just as the drawings carry the physical presence of the people they portray. \nArtists and makers represented in the drawings include Timothy Berry\, David Best\, Squeak Carnwath\, Guy Diehl\, Guillermo Galindo\, Mildred Howard\, Peter Koch\, Jerry Lin-Hsien Kung\, Kiki Smith\, Michael Wild\, Andrew Williams\, and Xiaoze Xie. The show is\, in a literal sense\, a show of hands—but also a portrait of these makers through the things their hands reveal. \nThese works were made possible by Magnolia Editions and the Magnolia Paper Lab with the assistance of Max Thill\, Tallulah Terryll\, Nicholas Price\, Alyssa Minadeo\, and Era Farnsworth.\n

SUMMARY:Artist Talk ~ False Gods
DESCRIPTION:False Gods\nA new show by surrealist painter\, muralist Bill Weber\, aka El Galllo at The Grand Gallery\, in Oakland. \nArtist Reception\nSeptember 5\nNoon – 5pm \nArtist Talk\nSeptember 12\n1pm – 2pm \nBill Weber’s work takes a hard look at the corruption of government and a decaying civilization. With a dystopian thread\, his meticulous technique involving layering color upon color reveals what life can look like given our current trajectory. The details are rich\, often depicting corporate\, industrial giants as ungainly four legged creatures roaming a desolate earth\, or a nightmarish transport machine with hellish backgrounds\, and Imagine Heironymous Bach meeting Dali. SUMMARY:Opening Reception – Patricia Guthrie: Get Up Stand Up
DESCRIPTION:One purpose of art is to support and communicate political messages. Using color\, letters\, and shapes\, Patricia Guthrie’s abstract quilts deliver political messages relating to the government\, international relationships\, and global warming. She creates artwork using cotton fabric\, wool batting\, dyes\, and machine stitching. \nBio:\nAfter retiring as a professor and department chair of Human Development and Women’s Studies at California State University East Bay\, Patricia Guthrie decided to actively engage in the visual arts. She began taking community-based art classes: drawing\, photography\, quilt making\, and printing on fabric. Quilt making and all its aspects has become her passion. Guthrie hopes her quilts encourage viewers to move beyond art that is merely pleasing to the eye to seek a deeper meaning.\nHer work has been shown nationally and internationally including Schweinfurth Memorial\, Art Center\, Auburn\, New York; International Quilt Museum\, Lincoln\, Nebraska; Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; and Tuch + Technik Museum\, Neumunster\, Germany. SUMMARY:Where the Shadow Falls - New works by Faye Wheeler
DESCRIPTION:Where the Shadow Falls by Faye Wheeler explores the California wilderness as both inspiration and refuge. Drawing from her experiences hiking through Bay Area redwood forests and golden-grass hillsides\, Wheeler creates brightly saturated landscapes that blur the line between memory and imagination. Slightly surreal in color and form\, these paintings and drawings become meditations on love\, connection\, loss\, and the places—and people—we carry with us. SUMMARY:False Gods ~ Opening Reception with El Gallo
The details are rich\, often depicting corporate\, industrial giants as ungainly four legged creatures roaming a desolate earth\, or a nightmarish transport machine with hellish backgrounds\, and Imagine Hieronymus Bosch meeting Dali. There you will find El Gallo.

SUMMARY:Are you with me NOW? - Open First Friday
DESCRIPTION:Are you with me NOW?\, a solo exhibition by Jeanne Lorenz\, featuring new abstract paintings that emerge from an expansive daily drawing practice. Guided by the belief that art can metabolize the emotional and ecological turbulence of our time\, Lorenz transforms accumulated gestures into luminous vertical paintings that balance vulnerability with resilience. She embraces painting as an act of participation rather than escape\, one that holds grief\, humor\, light\, and hope in dynamic tension. \nOakland Art Murmur First Friday: September 4\, 5-8 pm\nArtist talk/Closing reception: Saturday\, September 19\, 3-5 pm\nGallery Hours: Saturdays\, 12-5 pm & First Fridays\, 5-8 pm\nAll events and entrance to the gallery are free of charge
