February 21 @ 12:00 pm - March 28 @ 5:00 pm

Manna Gallery is pleased to announce “Layers”, an exhibition of three abstract artists, Kathryn Arnold, Barbara Maricle and Kay Marshall. Their works, although very different in approach, all present rich, complex statements where many layers of paint interact with, around and through each other. Exhibition opens Friday, February 21 and continues to March 28.  A reception for the three artists happens on First Friday, March 6, from 6-8 pm, when they will be present to greet visitors and discuss the ideas and issues behind their artistic processes.

Kathryn Arnold’s works “…display the density and layered mark making that point to my artistic process and intent. In a new series titled ‘after Diebenkorn’, of which a few are exhibited in this exhibition, I wish to engage my audience with visual understanding of Diebenkorn’s geometric constructions deconstructed into their original organic inspiration. I do this through appropriating specific color information (color palette) relating to a specific work which I then use for the title… the works provide for the viewer a sense of timelessness and infinite space which relates the works in a direct fashion back to Diebenkorn’s muse – often times this was the Ocean Park area in Santa Monica…Four of the works in this exhibition belong to my series titled “The Poet”. These works are inspired by the Japanese poet Basho’s haiku and contain my interpretations of his wanderings throughout Japan.”

Barbara Maricle presents examples from two different series of work. “Over the past number of years I have explored my interest in how we perceive and navigate space through several related series that are inspired by aerial photography, cartography, landscape, and movement and are influenced by abstract expressionism.  The Evanesce Series evokes a feeling of following a path that you don’t see clearly, the uncovering of new territory, the obstacles your guide, wondering about the road not taken….. Pieces from my Continental Drift Series appear to be images of continents, land masses and bodies of water.  Although not based in reality, they contain the shapes and textures of geology and imagine new or past configurations of the Earth’s surface.”

Kay Marshall says this about her work.” My work is very process orientated and experimental. It explores themes of memory, impermanence, and the relationship between opposites such as order versus chaos, structure versus gesture, and line versus form. I create mixed media paintings and monotypes using acrylics, oils, pastels, inks, collage and various drawing items. I try to develop levels of meaning by building and/or removing layers of paint, ink, paper and other materials. Each piece has its own history, which is partially revealed through various layers. They become a personal language of animated marks. They are images and marks contained in layers of space and time.”
