Title: Hysterical Organs Closing Reception
Dates: Dec 7th
Time: 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Aubrey Learner and Mitsu Okubo are artists that don’t waste any
time getting to the meat of the matter. The first does strikingly realist “unnatural histories” in Arcimboldo-esque arrangements of macabre objects, while the second forges his textured portraits in a white-hot clash of free-form revulsion and jocularity. However different their styles are, they share a bugaboo when it comes to the question of being trapped in a flesh machine.

Exploring these unsettling corners of corporeality is the driving thrust of Hysterical Organs, the two-person installation opening November 2nd at Classic Cars West in Uptown Oakland. Paintings, prints and other 2D works will fill the walls of the cavernous showroom as they fill you with a luxurious and colorful unease.
The uncanny and the visceral will reach new highs and lows in these works on view through the last days of December. Get a raucous taste of human excess during the November or December openings as part of the First Fridays street festival, or come for a more cozy evening at their November 10th reception where the artists will debut new zines and prints.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Drawing from a lifelong fascination with the natural sciences and the macabre, Aubrey Learner’s work aims to dissect the anxiety of the human animal as it tries to be both wild and tame. Learner holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of Akron and an M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has shown in the Bay Area, New York, and Los Angeles and currently lives and works in San Francisco.

Mitsu Okubo is a California artist. Everything he makes is a reconciliation for not being a stand up comedian. Abject and biting while joyously sophomoric, Mitsu’s art shocks and delights like the walls of your favorite rest stop bathroom.
