DESCRIPTION:Join us at SLATE Contemporary Gallery on Saturday\, October 10 from 4-6pm for an artist reception in celebration of our newest exhibition\, “Angela Johal: Intersecting Colour.” \nThis exhibition invites viewers to explore how hue and tone interact across vividly painted color fields. Johal approaches each painting as a puzzle to solve\, seeking balance among dichotomous realms—physical and spiritual\, light and dark\, vivid and subdued—creating compositions that reveal how each color shifts\, responds to\, and is transformed by those around it. Steeped in color theory\, Johal’s work is deeply informed by the human eye’s natural passage through dimension. This exhibition features abstracted geometric compositions that\, when meditated on\, transform into natural landscapes\, animal-like forms\, and shifting light.

With a special exhibition in the Inner Room Gallery\, Second Sight: views of the natural world\, photographic imagery by Joy Every \nReception for the Artists: Saturday\, November 7th at 1:00pm\nArtists’ Talks: Saturday\, December 12\, 2pm \nMore about Tilt Toward Joy: Both artists share a love of color and a playful approach to form\, Hacker with her free form sculptures and Briones-Hansen with her collage like paintings.  These two artists’ unique shapes appear to be in conversation with one another and lend an almost anthropomorphic quality to their abstract sculptures and paintings. Their work will be displayed together in the Main Gallery to create a colorful and joyous atmosphere —something we could all use right now.

(Closed Thanksgiving weekend) \nConcurrent with exhibition\, Tilt Toward Joy\, SECONG SIGHT is a solo show in the Inner Room Gallery\, of the photographic imagery of Joy Every.\nEvery says about this work:  “Second Sight is an exhibit of photographs in which what I see of the natural world is enhanced through double exposures and repeated images. As in nature\, each work holds more than one moment at a time; the recurrence of forms\, the rhythm of seasons and the way memory informs what I observe. For me\, the camera slows down the act of seeing\, whereas digital duplication enhances the feelings I get when I intensely and intentionally look at the details large and small of the world around me. Viewers are invited to pause\, look again and find that the second look is often the most true.”

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second reception of Paul Thompson’s latest drawings/paintings in his show entitled “West Wild: American Culture.”\n*One free beer for anyone who attends wearing a cowboy hat! \nFor October/November FM Oakland is excited to host the recent works by local Berkeley native Paul Thompson. Thompson’s work focuses on the romance and excitement of the wild west as he plays with paint\, line\, brushwork\, and composition to depict various scenes and portraits. His imagery highlights a range of cowboy life\, as it shows the somber loneliness of ranching\, to the rowdy and rough “fight or die” culture of bar fights and shootouts. Within that range one underlying aspect remains: his love for the wild west. \nPaul Thompson: Life of a Cowboy\n“I always played cowboys and indians with my brother as a kid \, and our father loved westerns. He would often play with us and eventually lived in the middle of the Nevada desert. We fantasized being cowboys and when we went to Nevada\, I enjoyed meeting real cowboys. It is still romantic and engaging to visit old western towns and imagine living as one. As an adult\, I took a tour of old western towns dressed as a cowboy. My mother used to draw with us and encouraged us to draw things that we imagined\, so I have been drawing and painting western themes ever since. I don’t make art for money.
