DESCRIPTION:The Hidden Treasures of Stan Chan\nMay 26 – July 3 2026\nArtist’s Reception: Saturday\, May 30 1 – 4pm\nArtist’s Talk: Saturday\, June 13\, 2pm with a reading by author Joanne Furio.  This show is running Concurrently with Field notes \nGearbox Gallery is pleased to present the 2026 Inner Room juried show winner\, Stan Chan. Chan’s installation of artifacts\, writings and drawings creates an immersive experience that delves into a personal story of remembrance from his childhood in Oakland.  This visual reading of objects and colorful bits gives the viewer a glimpse into our local past through the art of Stan Chan.    \nChan says\, “Growing up in East Oakland my immigrant parents were able to buy a house in the 1950s.  It was a Victorian house and it was my shelter from the outside world.  When I was a kid\, I dug holes in the walls and in my mattress where I hid my treasures and through the years things accumulated in the nooks and crannies of the house.” It is from these memories that Chan’s installation of treasure boxes and colorful collages emerge. \nStan Chan\, is an artist living in San Francisco with deep roots in Oakland. Receiving his MA from CCAC\, Chan has shown in many solo and group shows locally and nationally including the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:In Your Own Time: Leyla Pekmen + Julien Laporte
DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents In Your Own Time\, a two-person exhibition featuring Turkish painter and sculptor Leyla Pekmen and French painter Julien Laporte. Known for their vivid compositions that illustrate the emotional landscape of their respective regions\, both artists consciously embrace the beauty of their surroundings. Steeped in the history of local painting traditions\, Pekmen and Laporte reject three-dimensionality\, creating narratives through the interplay of color\, line\, and form. \nLeyla Pekmen’s storybook-like compositions are influenced by Ottoman miniature paintings. Originating in the 15th century to narrate the conquests of the ruling class\, Pekmen instead opts for scenes of contemporary gathering and recreation. Her jovial paintings examine moments of rest and play that allow space for resilience while living under oppressive systems. \nIn Pekmen’s work\, an idyllic world of larger-than-life flora\, gentle waterfalls\, and warm oceans ensconces tiny figures. Engaged in activities such as swimming\, strolling\, and lounging\, the figures occupy an infinite\, peaceful present. They are lovingly watched over and diligently protected by grand features of the landscape. \nJulien Laporte’s sun-dappled paintings of the Mediterranean channel the enduring vitality of the coastal landscape and its interaction with the built environment\, both as an ecosystem and as a source of artistic inspiration. Drawing on the vibrant and expressive tradition of the Fauves\, Laporte’s work demonstrates an ecological and historical sensitivity to the region\, centering on experiential and energetic engagement with the natural world. \nLaporte’s thick brushstrokes and unrestrained color palette command attention\, inviting the viewer to feel and see the landscape anew. Reducing form to pattern and shape\, expressively rendered trees intermingle with flatly colored architectural features. Void of human figuration\, Laporte’s immersive landscapes capture moments of stillness along coastal paths\, through open windows\, along curving stairwells\, and at cliff edges. \nIn Your Own Time will run Thursday\, June 4\, to Saturday\, August 1\, 2026. An opening reception will be held Friday\, June 5 from 5-8 pm.

Mark Bauer about his work\, starting at 1 pm. \nWhat the ? \nWhat does it mean? Where DO we stand? \n​Mixed messages\, absurd scenarios\, improbable unrealities – M. Mark Bauer wades into dynamic narratives and an onslaught of incomprehensible untruths\, pervasive and invasive\, redirecting the course of events and outcome potentials at hand.  Mesmerizing rhythmic patterns groove in undulating serenity as wildly complex scenarios unfold in the eight canvases on view. Hybrid creatures and colorful characters cavort in a surreal concoction that speaks to the consequences of our collective insanity on each other and the natural world while sly humor entertains with bursts of sudden recognition. The Artist observes as Eye-hook\, Snake Tongue\, Bo Peep and a Sheep and The Big Bad Wolf join in this precisely executed spectacle of chaos.

SUMMARY:Pat O’Connor: Reclaimed | Closing Reception and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Pat O’Connor\, “Winter Sun and Shadow\,” 2026\, 48” x 36” x 2”\, salvaged cardboard\, acrylic paint\, birch board \nPat O’Connor’s work has long explored the intersection of object\, time\, and narrative. Beginning with paper pulp castings over structures at a former World War II naval base\, O’Connor developed a sustained interest in materials marked by history. In her exhibit\, Reclaimed\, she is drawn to surfaces shaped by wear\, weather\, and works with cardboard salvaged from the streets\, recycling bins\, and packaging. Through folding\, layering\, stitching\, printing\, and painting\, she transforms these fragments and other seemingly incongruent materials into richly layered assemblages. Guided by shifts in patina and form\, O’Connor builds surfaces dense with histories\, lush harmonies\, and active surfaces. Cardboard\, humble and impermanent\, originates from trees. O’Connor links the material back to the natural world. In some works\, she introduces imagery of branches and tree forms\, creating both calm and unsettling dialogues between the material’s fragile present and its living origin. In a culture shaped by disposability\, O’Connor elevates overlooked materials\, inviting viewers to sense the stories embedded in ordinary things as well as imagine ways the industrial and natural worlds might endure together. \nBio:\nPat O’Connor is an artist whose practice spans drawing\, painting\, assemblage\, and site-responsive sculpture. Her work has been exhibited widely\, most recently at the de Young Museum in San Francisco\, Transmission Gallery in Oakland\, the Sasse Museum of Art in Pomona\, California\, and O’Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley. Her pieces are held in public and private collections\, including a public commission at the University of California\, San Francisco Medical Center. Pat received her BA in Painting and Drawing from UC Davis and pursued graduate study in textile arts at San Francisco State University. Honors include a San Francisco Foundation Grant\, the Robert Rauschenberg-hosted Power of Art Award from the Lab School of Washington\, D.C.\, and the Arts Educator of the Year Award from the San Francisco Unified School District. SUMMARY:Emily Shepard: In Flux  | Closing Reception and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Emily Shepard\, “Conversant\,” 2026\, 32” x 71”\, photo courtesy of the artist  \nEmily Shepard’s large-scale abstract paintings pull viewers into an immersive\, otherworldly space — one of shifting depths\, interacting layers\, and arched forms that float like portals above restless water. Working on unstretched canvas\, she builds richly textured surfaces through gestural mark-making\, watery drips\, and stitched canvas shapes. Indecipherable loops of script speak to rhythm\, breath\, and cycles.\nShepard’s work is mirrored by her practice as a year round swimmer in the San Francisco Bay: moving her body through cold water\, attuned to tides and currents\, releasing into the hypnotic push and pull. Her painting practice and bay swimming share the need for focused attention\, awareness of sensation\, and internal states. Each artwork\, like each swim\, is a search for wholeness\, presence\, and embodied learning. \nBio:\nEmily Shepard is a Bay Area painter\, born in Boston\, Massachusetts. She earned her MFA with distinction from the California College of the Arts where she received the Barclay Simpson Award. She has shown her work locally and nationally\, including the Crocker–Kingsley Exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. Currently she has three pieces on exhibit in “Voices without Boundaries” at the Sasse Museum of Art in Pomona\, CA. Shepard is a Kipaipai Fellow and member of the artist-run gallery\, Mercury 20 in Oakland\, CA. Her work is included in private and corporate collections. Shepard swims year round without a wetsuit in the San Francisco Bay. DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents I Watched Your Leaves Grow Silver in the Wind\, an exhibition featuring paintings by Andrew Catanese. The exhibition explores ecologies of recollection\, as Catanese channels connections among places and individuals\, particularly those who linger only in memory. \nFor Catanese\, painting is a narrative medium that moves across time and space\, reshaping how we see the everyday world. Their canvases feature landscapes\, shifting weather\, animals\, and spectral figures\, each serving as a portal to distinct moments and memories the artist calls “slips” in time and place. Painting becomes a bridge to people and environs that have been lost\, abandoned\, or rediscovered. Gazes\, where they appear\, are slant\, unfocused. Animals sulk through forests\, searching\, unaware that they are being watched. Full figures\, with backs turned\, are ensconced in brambles\, alienating them from the viewer. Imbued with distance and uncertainty\, Catanese’s lush compositions swim in windswept\, haunting ambiguity. \nA mysterious and quiet spirituality permeates the work\, suggesting something just beyond reach. Catanese’s expressive use of color deepens the atmosphere\, intensifying the sense of connection and longing throughout the exhibition. Amid today’s uncertainty and division\, Catanese’s paintings remind us of our deep-rooted desire for kinship. These poetic works encourage reflection and uncover the bonds that persist\, even in the most turbulent times. \nI Watched Your Leaves Grow Silver in the Wind will run from August 6 to September 27\, 2026.

SUMMARY:First Friday Art Walk - Society of Artists and Makers Student Show
DESCRIPTION:The Society of Artists and Makers is a club created by community college art students in the East Bay. The club was founded in Spring 2026 following the decision to demolish the Laney Tower Building\, and as a result\, decommission the June Steingart Art Gallery (aka the Laney Art Gallery).  \nGoals of the club include increasing accessibility around showcasing art\, fostering community among students outside of class\, and responding to the ongoing loss of art spaces in the Bay Area.  \nThe werkshack Student Show is the inaugural show of The Society of Artists and Makers. Some artists are showing work for the very first time and others are decades into their careers. All work is made by current students enrolled at College of Alameda\, Berkeley City College\, Merritt College\, and Laney College. DESCRIPTION:Join acclaimed Bay Area artist\, educator\, author\, and curator Lisa Solomon for a special closing event celebrating Everything Must Go Juried Group Show. Known for her mixed-media works and large-scale installations that explore themes of identity\, craft\, domesticity\, and personal history\, Solomon has exhibited nationally and internationally and is the author of several books on art and creativity\, including the forthcoming Art/Craft/Color. During this brief presentation\, she will share insights into her selection process\, discuss the exhibition’s themes\, and highlight works that resonated with her vision as juror. Following the talk\, she will present two exhibition awards that extend opportunities beyond the exhibition itself. The Juror Award includes a featured hallway exhibition at Manna Gallery during the 2026–27 exhibition season\, while the Manna Gallery Award includes an invitation to the gallery’s annual year-end group exhibition. By transforming these once-ubiquitous objects into personal and provocative expressions\, the artists revive nostalgia\, challenge format\, and reframe the way we view music\, memory\, and material. Together\, their works create a dynamic visual mixtape that pays homage to the golden age of the compact disc—remixed for a new era. \nUltraHive 4 has recently shown at the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles. DESCRIPTION:Dalit Fresco and Jan Blythe will discuss their exhibition Fragments of Belonging at GearBox Gallery on Saturday\, August 15th at 1:00pm.  Come join the conversation. \nAbout Dalit Fresco: Growing up at the intersection of Asia\, Europe and Africa\, a place where varied layers of cultures and traditions\, languages and signs\, music and soundscapes\, have all shaped Dalit’s outlook\, offering a visual abundance of colors and designs. Fragments of Belonging is a collection of recent pieces that are influenced by an emotional sensitivity to events of loss\, as well as confidently reaching out for a dialogue between ways of seeing\, with a constant reflection of memories and current state of observing and interacting. \nAbout Jan Blythe: Born in Scotland\, Jan was raised in Glasgow\, a city with strong arts and cultural heritage.  Her recent works in the show encompass personal\, found and natural materials\, which are hand stitched together to form sculptures. Another work is a stack of cut\, tartan wool fabrics\, Jan has collected over the years.  She includes a piece of sculpture made from strips of reclaimed swimming pool cover draped over a wooden form. \nGearBox Gallery is open Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm to 5pm\nLocated in the Art Building at 770 West Grand Ave in Oakland.
