DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents I Watched Your Leaves Grow Silver in the Wind\, an exhibition featuring paintings by Andrew Catanese. The exhibition explores ecologies of recollection\, as Catanese channels connections among places and individuals\, particularly those who linger only in memory. \nFor Catanese\, painting is a narrative medium that moves across time and space\, reshaping how we see the everyday world. Their canvases feature landscapes\, shifting weather\, animals\, and spectral figures\, each serving as a portal to distinct moments and memories the artist calls “slips” in time and place. Painting becomes a bridge to people and environs that have been lost\, abandoned\, or rediscovered. Gazes\, where they appear\, are slant\, unfocused. Animals sulk through forests\, searching\, unaware that they are being watched. Full figures\, with backs turned\, are ensconced in brambles\, alienating them from the viewer. Imbued with distance and uncertainty\, Catanese’s lush compositions swim in windswept\, haunting ambiguity. \nA mysterious and quiet spirituality permeates the work\, suggesting something just beyond reach. Catanese’s expressive use of color deepens the atmosphere\, intensifying the sense of connection and longing throughout the exhibition. Amid today’s uncertainty and division\, Catanese’s paintings remind us of our deep-rooted desire for kinship. These poetic works encourage reflection and uncover the bonds that persist\, even in the most turbulent times. \nI Watched Your Leaves Grow Silver in the Wind will run from August 6 to September 27\, 2026.

DESCRIPTION:Donald (Aldo) Farnsworth Artist’s Talk\nHands of the Maker: A Show of Hands\n​\nSaturday\, September 12th\, starting at 2 pm \nPlease join us for the free event with Aldo’s Talk starting at 2 pm on Saturday\, September 12th.\nAldo will discuss his explorations in paper making and his twelve drawings on view at Transmission Gallery. \nHands of the Maker: A Show of Hands presents twelve drawings by Aldo Farnsworth\, made with graphite\, quarried chalk\, and colored pigments on linen and hemp paper.  \nThe works focus on the hands of makers captured with close attention to intimate details: the nuance of gesture\, the particular way they hold a pencil or object\, often with glasses at hand. These quiet arrangements suggest drawing\, seeing\, measuring\, and making—the physical evidence of each subject’s creative work and daily life.  \nThe handmade paper\, with its deckle edges and distinctive felt-hair texture associated with Renaissance papers\, layers another history into these contemporary portraits. Farnsworth makes the paper himself\, raising worms to compost the linen\, beating the hemp fibers\, and forming each unique sheet\, connecting the hands depicted in the drawings to his own hand through the material. The paper carries the physical presence of the artist who made it\, just as the drawings carry the physical presence of the people they portray. \nArtists and makers represented in the drawings include Timothy Berry\, David Best\, Squeak Carnwath\, Guy Diehl\, Guillermo Galindo\, Mildred Howard\, Peter Koch\, Jerry Lin-Hsien Kung\, Kiki Smith\, Michael Wild\, Andrew Williams\, and Xiaoze Xie. The show is\, in a literal sense\, a show of hands—but also a portrait of these makers through the things their hands reveal.  \nThese works were made possible by Magnolia Editions and the Magnolia Paper Lab with the assistance of Max Thill\, Tallulah Terryll\, Nicholas Price\, Alyssa Minadeo\, and Era Farnsworth.\n​

Together\, these works invite us to explore the space between captivity and liberation\, to see differently\, and to imagine a world beyond systems of punishment. \nFriday\, October 2 | 1:00–9:00 PM \n1:00 PM | Gallery Opens\nEmpowerment Avenue’s inStudio will open its doors at 1:00 PM\, inviting visitors to experience The Distance Between: Traveling Beyond Count Time and spend time with the work throughout the afternoon. \nLive at inStudio\n6:00 PM | Panel Discussion: Black Yearning for Freedom \nAt 6:00 PM\, we will gather for a conversation exploring a continuing Black yearning for freedom and the ways artists carry memory\, history\, our bodies\, and our imaginations onto canvas and paper. \nMoving between histories of enslavement and confinement and the realities of incarceration today\, the conversation will consider art as a place to hold these experiences while also imagining beyond them. What does it mean to create from within systems of confinement without allowing confinement to define the limits of the imagination? DESCRIPTION:Please join us for William Rhodes’ talk with gospel choir performance by the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir\, music conductor and leader Kenneth Little\nSaturday\, Oct 3rd starting at 2 pm \nThis is part of a series of NEXUS SFBay events including the Caleb Dowdell performance with his piece\, Our Prism of Dreams\, starting at 1:30 pm just downstairs  at Gearbox Gallery\, performance about 15 minutes. William’s talk starts at 2 pm upstairs with the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir closing out the event with a Gospel Choir performance. See one or both at that galleries at 770 West Grand Ave in Oakland.  \nMore about Fear Not\, William Rhodes’ solo exhibition at Transmission Gallery: \nWilliam Rhodes’s sculptures on view incorporate objects that have been used\, inherited\, discarded\, or found with elements he has carved himself. Trained early on as a furniture maker\, he combines hand carved figures\, flames and snakes with objects collected from a family home\, photographs\, hardware\, tools\, and other remnants of everyday life. Neon words signal from some pieces. \nThe resulting works resemble shrines or memorials\, but they remain grounded in the ordinary. Religious symbols appear alongside household objects. A photograph might be surrounded by carved waves\, tools\, hardware\, animals\, or religious symbols. A suitcase can become an architectural space. A toilet becomes the base of an unexpected monument. Things with little apparent value are carefully incorporated into elaborate constructions\, their histories becoming part of the work.\n​\nRhodes is equally interested in people; family\, mentors\, and leaders\, as well as those who have been overlooked or treated as disposable\, recognizing and elevating their presence in his work. By giving attention to these lives\, enshrining and revering them\, he considers how value is assigned and who gets remembered. \nThe title Fear Not appears in the work as both a phrase and a kind of instruction. It can be read in relation to the religious imagery that runs throughout the sculptures\, but it also takes on a morepersonal meaning. To look closely at lives and objects that are easily dismissed is\, in its own way\, an act of resistance to that dismissal.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk – Patricia Guthrie: Get Up Stand Up
DESCRIPTION:One purpose of art is to support and communicate political messages. Using color\, letters\, and shapes\, Patricia Guthrie’s abstract quilts deliver political messages relating to the government\, international relationships\, and global warming. She creates artwork using cotton fabric\, wool batting\, dyes\, and machine stitching. \nBio:\nAfter retiring as a professor and department chair of Human Development and Women’s Studies at California State University East Bay\, Patricia Guthrie decided to actively engage in the visual arts. She began taking community-based art classes: drawing\, photography\, quilt making\, and printing on fabric. Quilt making and all its aspects has become her passion. Guthrie hopes her quilts encourage viewers to move beyond art that is merely pleasing to the eye to seek a deeper meaning.\nHer work has been shown nationally and internationally including Schweinfurth Memorial\, Art Center\, Auburn\, New York; International Quilt Museum\, Lincoln\, Nebraska; Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; and Tuch + Technik Museum\, Neumunster\, Germany. SUMMARY:Artist Talk – Tara Esperanza: Close to Home
DESCRIPTION:Tara Esperanza\, Guardians\, 2026\, acrylic-on-panel\, 20” x 16”\, Photo courtesy of the artist \nWhether painted in California or Oaxaca\, the works in Close to Home begin with the same impulse: to slow down and look closely. Working on a more intimate scale than in her previous work\, Tara Esperanza found herself drawn to quiet moments of observation\, where familiar plants reveal unexpected beauty through color\, form\, and light.\nCreated between two places that have become part of her life\, these paintings are less about geography than about attention. Though rooted in different landscapes\, each painting is shaped by the same curiosity and sense of wonder inspired by the resilience and sculptural elegance of plants. For many years\, succulents have been Esperanza’s way of exploring themes of adaptation\, diversity\, and endurance. Through this body of work\, the smaller scale invites viewers to slow down\, look closely\, and discover that what is closest to us often has the most to reveal. \nBio:\nTara Esperanza resides in Oakland\, California\, where succulents thrive year-round. When she is not painting\, she enjoys running and capturing images that later inspire her work. Esperanza earned a BFA in Painting\, graduating cum laude from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth\, and studied plein air painting in Brittany\, France. A representational painter inspired by nature\, she has dedicated years to portraying the remarkable beauty and diversity of succulents. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery in Oakland\, CA\, since 2020. Her work has been shown at the Women’s United Art Movement Virtual Gallery\, as well as numerous group exhibitions. In 2025\, Esperanza received Best of Show at the Annual National Juried Painting Exhibition at Emerald Springs Art Center in Oregon. Her paintings have been featured in Create! Engaging in profound considerations of what it is to be human—our physicality\, sense of self\, relationships\, consciousness\, and creativity\, these artists invite us to engage with these shifting\, eternal questions and reflect on our own experiences—be they practical\, peaceful\, disturbing\, humorous\, fragmented\, spiritual\, or otherworldly. As individuals\, choices that begin with who and what to portray later manifest in stylistic and material communiquès that boldly and poetically reveal themselves to the world. Collectively\, the psychologically charged spectrum of the group reminds us of the myriad ways our sentience can be narrated. Like Anais Nin said\, “We don’t see things as they are\, we see them as we are.” \nBio:\nWith Present Figures\, Laura Malone expands her practice to curation. Malone invited four artists to show alongside her\, chosen for their unique and diverse approaches to representing the figure: two Southern California artists — Cindy Craig and Shannon Rae Fincke — and two from the Bay Area — Nina Katz and Heidi Brueckner. Collectively their work has been shown across the globe in Europe\, Asia\, and the United States. Malone’s artwork was featured in The Crocker Kingsley National Art Competition and included in “Disrupted Realism\,” juried by John Seed\, who wrote the book of the same name.
