SUMMARY:Ellen Bepp: The Ghosts We Carry
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Bepp: The Ghosts We Carry\nThursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays\, 12-5 pm or by appointment. \nArtist’s Talk: Saturday October 31st\, starting at 2 pm \nAddressing ideas of identity\, cultural preservation and social justice\, Ellen Bepp’s mixed media work in The Ghosts We Carry reflects on the experience and legacy of a difficult period in our American history\, WWII incarceration camps and their aftermath\, with a keen awareness of current events. \nMore than 120\,000 people of Japanese descent were remanded to these camps in a wave of fear that swept America in response to attacks on Pearl Harbor\, including Heart Mountain in Wyoming\, where Bepp’s family was incarcerated. \nIncorporating fragments of familial writing\, traditional textiles\, imbedded text and Japanese imagery\, Bepp’s work reflects on the xenophobia\, racial slurs and casual taunts aimed at Asian Americans as well as the pain and despair of the camps. Beyond the fear and loss\, emerges the powerful story of resilience and perseverance that sustained detainees through their experience and in resuming their place as autonomous citizens. A thoughtful examination of the work\, standing with the elemental history of the objects and absorbing the words\, honors that journey. \nAll are welcome to join us for Ellen Bepp’s Artist’s Talk\, Saturday\, October 31st starting at 2 pm. \nWhile you’re in the gallery check out the concurrent solo exhibition with more art to see in our the gallery showroom.

SUMMARY:Paul Thompson’s “West Wild: American Culture”
DESCRIPTION:For October/November FM Oakland is excited to host the recent works by local Berkeley native Paul Thompson in his latest collection entitled “West Wild: American Culture.” Thompson’s work focuses on the romance and excitement of the wild west as he plays with paint\, line\, brushwork\, and composition to depict various scenes and portraits. His imagery highlights a range of cowboy life\, as it shows the somber loneliness of ranching\, to the rowdy and rough “fight or die” culture of bar fights and shootouts. Within that range one underlying aspect remains: his love for the wild west. \nPaul Thompson: Life of a Cowboy\n“I always played cowboys and indians with my brother as a kid \, and our father loved westerns. He would often play with us and eventually lived in the middle of the Nevada desert. We fantasized being cowboys and when we went to Nevada\, I enjoyed meeting real cowboys. It is still romantic and engaging to visit old western towns and imagine living as one. As an adult\, I took a tour of old western towns dressed as a cowboy. My mother used to draw with us and encouraged us to draw things that we imagined\, so I have been drawing and painting western themes ever since. I don’t make art for money. It is my therapy and as my mother says\, we share a healthy addiction.” \nOctober 2nd – November 28th\, 2026

SUMMARY:Material As Witness
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a two-dimensional image escapes the bounds of the frame\, the scrapbook\, or the screen? Material as Witness explores the photograph as object\, with its own material sensibility and narrative. Objects can trigger powerful emotions and memories\, and materials carry their own associations based on tactile properties or cultural significance. The artists in the exhibition engage in image-making\, in a truly hands-on sense\, to subvert (or amplify) the power attributed to photos as documentary evidence and bearers of truth. \nFeaturing Amy Yoshitsu\, dani lopez\, Gabby Severson\, Lucy Puls\, Sam Kober\, Sarah Sanford\, & Shirin Towfiq \nCurated by Rena Tom

SUMMARY:Night Watch // Gregory Rick
DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents Night Watch\, a striking exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Gregory Rick that boldly reimagines history painting through the fractured lens of contemporary life. \nApocryphal yet deeply referential and incisive\, Rick’s compositions collapse past events with biblical and mythological imagery\, art-historical allusions\, and capitalist spectacle into hypersaturated scenes that are at once facetious and unsettling. A burning cross\, a feline maw\, a tree of serpents\, and tigers charging toward machine-gun fire populate a world where violence–and communal acts of resistance–appear both ancient and immediate. \nFigures clad in Fila jackets\, yellow Hokas\, and other recognizable markers of contemporary consumer culture anchor these frenetic compositions in the present. As a veteran\, citizen\, and subject\, Rick draws upon collective memory to confront the cognitive dissonance of navigating everyday life amid recurring cycles of violence\, surveillance\, and oppression. In works such as Night Watch (We Got Us)\, Rembrandt’s civic militia meets Picasso’s Guernica\, transforming the historical tableau into a contemporary cry for help and vision of mutual aid. \nA few of the works are painted and collaged on silk mesh\, their transparencies exposing the layers of their construction and underscoring history itself as an unstable\, assembled narrative. In Night Watch\, Rick contends with what it means to stay woke and on watch in the 2020s. \nNight Watch runs from September 30 to October 31\, 2026 with an opening reception Friday\, October 2 from 5-8pm.

SUMMARY:Angela Johal: Intersecting Colour
DESCRIPTION:Join us at SLATE Contemporary Gallery on Saturday\, October 10 from 4-6pm for an artist reception in celebration of our newest exhibition\, “Angela Johal: Intersecting Colour.” \nThis exhibition invites viewers to explore how hue and tone interact across vividly painted color fields. Johal approaches each painting as a puzzle to solve\, seeking balance among dichotomous realms—physical and spiritual\, light and dark\, vivid and subdued—creating compositions that reveal how each color shifts\, responds to\, and is transformed by those around it. Steeped in color theory\, Johal’s work is deeply informed by the human eye’s natural passage through dimension. This exhibition features abstracted geometric compositions that\, when meditated on\, transform into natural landscapes\, animal-like forms\, and shifting light.

SUMMARY:Leah Korican: DOILoveYou Too
DESCRIPTION:Leah Korican\, DOILoveYou Too\, 2026\, acrylic\, cutouts\, lantern globe\, dimensions variable\, photo courtesy of the artist \nLeah Korican’s installation is part of her ongoing DOILoveYou series and is a variation on a piece created for the Nashville International Airport\, which was installed 2020-2022. It celebrates anonymous women\, crocheting and creating\, making doilies and antimacassars\, and the meditative aspects of their repetitive gestures. This work says let’s not merely make decor — let’s take up space. The cut paper drapes across the ceiling and plays with light and shadow\, and brings the viewer into a place of both reverie and exhilaration. \nBio:\nLeah Korican is a visual artist and writer based in Oakland\, CA. She has a BA from UC Berkeley and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited nationally\, including at the Richmond Art Center\, Bedford Gallery\, and Triton Museum\, among others. Her public art commissions include a large-scale\, site-specific cutout at the Nashville International Airport and permanent artworks for Kehilla Community Synagogue in Piedmont\, California and Rumsey Engineers in Oakland. She is an award winner in the 2026 Guild of American Paper Cutters exhibition “Cutting East to West” at the Heritage Asian Art Museum in Chicago\, Illinois. This is her third solo exhibition at Mercury 20 Gallery. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 24\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, November 7\, 3 – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Jill McLennan: harm_less
DESCRIPTION:Jill McLennan’s work gives voice to the harmless\, reflecting on the federal government’s decision to rescind the definition of harm (2026) as it applies to the protection of animals and their habitats\, listed under the Endangered Species Act (1975). In her art\, she depicts animals adapting\, inventing new ways to thrive amidst human impact. Using sumi ink\, a brush\, and mulberry paper\, she paints mammals\, birds\, amphibians\, plants\, trees\, and rivers. Then\, tearing the paper\, she applies these images to wood panels. Adding watercolor and handmade paper\, she creates a transformation from reality to wonder. McLennan states\, “The animals are here alongside us\, they have always been here\, and it is our duty to ensure that they remain\, that their habitat is here on earth for generations to come. May my art be a message to harm less\, a cry to the present and a hope for the future.” \nBio:\nJill McLennan creates paintings\, collages and prints inspired by her surroundings and the stories that she collects. She has been a member of Mercury 20 Gallery since 2007. She is an active member of her neighborhood\, Jingletown Arts\, Business + Community (JABC)\, organizing Open Studios as well as beautification projects. She recently printed a series of linoleum blocks with poems\, telling stories of migration and climate change\, through a residency at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley\, CA. McLennan has completed two public art projects: Jingletown Birds at 401 Derby and Emeryville Perspectives at 65th and Christie Streets. Both are cut steel fences depicting the local shoreline with birds\, designed by McLennan and executed by local metal fabricators. Her work was accepted to the deYoung Open in 2020 and 2023. As an artist and teacher\, she is deeply invested in protecting her environment\, inspiring the youth\, and spreading hope and joy into the world. \nGallery Hours: Friday and Saturday\, 12 – 5 pm (and by appointment)\nArtists’ Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 24\, 3 – 5 pm\nOakland Art Murmur / First Friday: November 6\, 5 – 9 pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, November 7\, 3 – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Pat O'Connor\, K.C. Rosenberg\, Emily Shepard: Material Messages
DESCRIPTION:Left to right: KC Rosenberg\, “Redeem\,” 2017\, Acrylic paint and laser cut canvas on felt 8”x 9” unframed\, 13”x16” framed (photo courtesy of the artist); Emily Shepard\, “Approach I\,” 2026\, acrylic\, ink\, canvas\, thread on panel\, 24” x 30”. Photo: Sibila Savage; Pat O’Connor\, “A Realignment” 2024\, Salvaged cardboard\, acrylic paint 22 in H x 120 in W x 12 in D. Photo: Jeannie O’Connor \nMaterial Messages brings together three artists whose abstract practices are guided by a collaboration with their materials. Each follows a distinct pathway\, using stains\, layering\, repetition\, text fragments\, and evidence of the body as carriers of information. \nPat O’Connor considers the histories held in ordinary objects. Found and repurposed cardboard becomes a layered assemblage\, taking on new form while traces of its previous life remain. K.C. Rosenberg uses words and fragments of language as both material and meaning. Removed from conventional narrative\, words shift between language and form\, creating a space where recognition gives way to abstraction and interpretation remains open. Emily Shepard builds forms through mark-making and assembly\, emphasizing presence. Gestures and materials come together into surfaces that echo experience\, attention\, and movement. Together\, the artists invite viewers to slow down and consider what material can reveal through their surfaces\, histories\, and transformations.

SUMMARY:Nicole Irene Anderson // Land Figures
DESCRIPTION:Johansson Projects presents Land Figures\, Nicole Irene Anderson’s second solo exhibition of landscape paintings and drawings with the gallery. \nKnown for her haunting California landscapes\, Nicole Irene Anderson renders subjects not as static portraits but as living atmospheres—shifting\, flickering\, and at times nearly dissolving into their environments. These forms become little islands unto themselves\, bound not by topography but by the emotional weather of their surroundings. Her work stirs with an uncanny\, near-hallucinatory stillness\, drawing us into moments where the familiar becomes spectral and the personal\, mythic. \nIn Anderson’s world\, the human condition is not a singular state but a diffuse\, mercurial experience. Our disparate and illusory natures seek to know each other in the darkness. The artist’s subjects—sometimes solitary\, sometimes accompanied—are lanterns in the fog. They search for connection\, and occasionally\, they find it in ways we do: in familiarity\, in strangeness\, in memory\, and the mirrors of perception. Her work suggests that this kind of connection\, fragile and radiant\, is possible only when we open ourselves to the ache of vulnerability. To witness the illusion of stillness in an entropic universe. \nTo describe Nicole Irene Anderson as simply a painter is to understate the force majeure she embodies in the studio. She mines the emotional terrain with an unrelenting commitment\, refusing sentimentality in favor of something sharper\, truer. Her hyperrealities are not polished simulations but cracked and flickering truths formed in the crucible of lived experience. They are a response to a world that often feels unreal—and a defiant claim that feeling\, in all its terror and tenderness\, is real. \nThis is not escapism. It is a radical kind of noticing. \nI’d like to believe her singular ability to reconstitute contemporary landscapes—both internal and external —was born from her formative time here on the Central Coast. A terrain too stark and too honest to allow for illusion. There is a coastal realism that imprints itself on those who grow up alongside its fog-drenched cliffs and fractured light. It teaches you to see things for what they are\, even when they hide. Anderson never stopped looking. Her paintings speak the visual language of that upbringing: attuned to absence\, lit by empathy\, edged with mystery. \nIn the lineage of artists who collapse the boundaries between place\, psyche\, and spirit\, Anderson is carving out her own topography—one that is deeply rooted\, relentlessly curious\, and wholly her own. \nBy Charles Smith \nLand Figures runs November 21\, 2026 to January 9\, 2027. \nAn opening reception will be held Saturday\, November 21 from 3-5pm.
