Curated by Katie Revilla as part of Chandra Cerrito / Art Advisors Artist in Residence program, smol^4 features paintings of self portraits and patterns focused on achieving meditative and aesthetic perfection. Through her work, nahkoura explores form in obsessive geometry and line; as well as by documenting her own body.
Fragmenting the canvas, nahkoura starts with simple lines that turn into the repeating pattern that is often seen throughout her work. Her paintings are not necessarily meant to be understood on a cerebral level; the emphasis is more on a visual sensation. This sensation is carried out through hard edged lines, bold colors and a gazing figure. Her work becomes both confrontational and mesmerizing.
nahkoura (b. Oakland) lives and works in Berkeley, CA. After living in Georgia for 10 years, she returned back to the Bay Area to attend UC Berkeley where she earned a B.A. in Art Practice in 2017. While at UC Berkeley, she was awarded an Honors Studio and an exhibition at the Worth Ryder Gallery. Her work has most recently been exhibited at Root Division, San Francisco, CA; Omi Gallery, Oakland, CA; and The Studio Gallery, Clarkston, GA. nahkoura works at art institutions around the Bay Area, including the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Museum of the African Diaspora, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
