“In this beautifully realized body of work Irene Nelson invites us to share in her intimate, personal, and poetic language. The work utilizes a language that is immediate, open and intuitive. It is emotionally charged while whispering truth.” -Michael David, M + David and Co., Brooklyn, NY, Painter, Educator, Curator
Irene Nelson is a painter, printmaker and ceramicist based in the East Bay. Originally from New York City, Nelson’s creative path led her to the Bay Area in the 1970s, where she initially explored photography, filmmaking, and acting. After a return to art school, she forged a successful 30-year career as the founder of a boutique graphic design firm. Since 2012, Nelson has engaged in a dedicated painting practice, with notable exhibitions at prestigious venues like the San Francisco DeYoung Museum Open 2020, Gearbox Gallery, and various curated group shows. Her works, whether paintings, photo etchings, or monoprints, convey curiosity, adventure, and optimism, characterized by vibrant colors and confident shapes that seamlessly interact in harmonious compositions.
