Kathy Kearns: Strangely Familiar
November 30, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - January 20, 2024 @ 5:00 pmFree
Transmission Gallery presents Strangely Familiar, recent wood-fired ceramic work by Kathy Kearns exploring her Greek heritage and connection to spirit and myth, on view through January 20th at 770 West Grand Ave in Oakland. Stop in during regular gallery hours, noon to 5 pm, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, or by appointment.
This show embodies two kinds of works created through the time intensive and laborious process of wood-firing: figurines and figurative sculpture. Named after nymphs and goddesses from Greek mythology, the figurines, the small porcelain statuettes, were inspired by Greek votives that were left in temples, shrines, tombs, and peak sanctuaries as a way to appease and worship the Gods and Goddesses. The figurative stoneware sculptures include two larger pieces and several smaller works titled after the actions they describe, protective, nurturing or joyful.
Showing concurrently at Transmission is ACROSS, an exhibition of prints by Toru Sugita exploring his trans-Pacific life, rooted in the Bay Area and Japan.
All are invited to attend the Artists’ talk with both Toru Sugita and Kathy Kearns discussing their work, Saturday, January 20th starting at 2pm.
