CHRISTINE MEURIS: SIGNS AND SYMBOLS
July 28 @ 12:00 pm - September 2 @ 5:00 pm
Free
Whenever Christine Meuris encounters a book with the phrase “Signs and Symbols” in the title, she picks it up, believing such a book might provide deeper insight into the world around her. In this body of work, Meuris continues creating imagined material relics of a society that bears the “signs and symbols” of the world in which it arose. She has pushed her materials in surprising ways — dyeing the stiff tarlatan fabric to make it colorful and soft; printing on mulberry paper during a residency at Kala Art Institute to add pattern and color. Through these materials, she is developing a language — the frayed linen applique, the paper-thread lines, the symmetrical paper cuts with their internal symbology. For this work, she draws on the traditions of Hawaiian Kapa (mulberry bark cloth), Kirigami (Japanese paper cutting), and quilt applique as both repair and decoration. Meuris owes a great debt to these traditions and the artists who practice them.
