AN ART AUCTION FOR EVERYONE with prices from $40 to $6,000
Oakland Art Murmur is gearing up for FLOURISH OAKLAND, its annual fundraising party and art auction!
The evening will celebrate more than just visual arts, with live Jazz from The Oakland Manouche Project, and cameos by Oakland Ballet dancers. Food from Michelin-star chef Daniel Patterson’s Haven and Plum Bar will highlight the culinary arts, complemented by desserts from Sweet Bar Bakery and drinks donated by Trumer Pils and Blue Moon. Former KPIX news anchor and artist Dana King will be the Master of Ceremonies, and over $3,000 in raffle prizes, containing gift certificates to Oakland’s top restaurants and entertainment venues, will be awarded.
For the first time, Oakland Art Murmur is offering the public an opportunity for advance purchase of auction items in an online marketplace, under “buy it now” terms, at 110% of retail. Anything that does not sell before October 11th will be offered in a silent auction at the Flourish event, with bids starting at 50% of regular retail prices.
The strategy has proved successful so far, as the highlight of the auction, Pop Artist Mel Ramos’ Batman woodcut print, donated by Magnolia Editions, sold within hours of the online marketplace going live. Undoubtedly Oakland’s most famous artist, Ramos has a devoted and growing international base of collectors who have been snapping up prints from his Superman and Batman editions, released earlier this summer.
The auction will present many more affordable works as well, sourced from OAM’s member galleries and donated by the artists themselves. Prices will start at $40 for a drawing made at the event by an “Artist in Action,” and one wall will be filled with works priced under $500 (with bids starting as low as $100). “This auction presents a wonderful opportunity for both seasoned collectors and those new to collecting, to acquire works by artists with gallery representation at very modest prices,” explains Danielle Fox, Co-Director of SLATE contemporary gallery and one of the auction’s organizers. Fox also recommends using the auction as a kickoff for holiday shopping, as small artworks make unique, and very personal, locally-sourced gifts.
Proceeds from the event will support Oakland Art Murmur’s website (which compiles information about exhibitions and events taking place at over 40 visual art venues in Oakland each month), their printed gallery guides, and their monthly free guided gallery walking tour program, and special family programming, which encourage visitors of all ages to explore Oakland’s creative culture.
